Despite some late buzz that they might be left out, the Clemson Tigers joined South Carolina and College of Charleston in the field of the 2014 NCAA Baseball Tournament.
The Tigers (36-23) drew the No. 3 seed in in the Nashville regional, where they will play Oregon (42-18) in the first round at 1 p.m. Friday. Top-seeded Vanderbilt (41-18) and Xavier (29-27) play in the other first-round game.
The regional could serve as a reunion for Clemson coach Jack Leggett and former Tigers assistant Tim Corbin, who has built an outstanding program at Vanderbilt.
The Nashville regional winner is paired against the winner of the Bloomington regional with national No. 4 seed Indiana, Youngstown State, Stanford and Indiana State.
South Carolina (42-16), which based on comments from the NCAA Selection Committee might not have been in consideration for a national seed after all, opens its 15th consecutive NCAA Tournament with a 7 p.m. Friday game against Big South Conference champion Campbell (40-19) in the Columbia regional. No. 2 seed Maryland (36-21), making its first NCAA appearance since 1971, and Old Dominion (36-24) complete the field.
The Columbia regional is paired with the Charlottesville regional, where No. 3 national seed, Bucknell, Liberty and Arkansas are competing.
College of Charleston is the No. 4 seed at the Gainesville regional, where national No. 2 seed Florida is the host and the Cougars' first-round opponent at 7 p.m. Friday. North Carolina and Long Beach State complete the field.
The Gainesville regional is paired with the Coral Gables regional, where Miami, Bethune-Cookman, Columbia and Texas Tech are competing.
All 16 regionals are four-team, double-elimination events running from Friday through Sunday or Monday, depending on "if necessary" games are needed.
The 16 regional champions advance to eight two-team, best-of-three super regionals the following weekend, with those eight series winners making up the field for the College World Series in Omaha in June.
