A few thoughts about Friday's action

* After their offensive performances in season-opening losses, Clemson and South Carolina may be wondering what happened to the livelier baseballs.

* Even with the offensive struggles, give the Tigers and Gamecocks credit for playing challenging opening-weekend series. That should pay dividends later in the season.

* Coastal Carolina had an eventful debut in its new Springs Brooks Stadium, getting a 4-0 victory over Old Dominion in front of 1,736 fans, a regular-season school record for an on-campus facility.

* The Citadel's James Reeves struck out 14 batters in six innings as the Bulldogs beat Air Force.

* The state's 11 NCAA Division I teams went 8-3, with Clemson, Furman and USC the only losers.

* Newberry announced late Friday evening that the start of its Saturday doubleheader at Lincoln Memorial had been moved up to 11 a.m.

* Seven players, including former Spartanburg Methodist pitcher Dylan Rogers from Union, did not make South Carolina's 35-player active roster for the season. Others were outfielder Zack Madden, infielder Everett Enyon and pitchers Alex Calvert, Banks Cromer, Dillon Hodge and Cole McMillan.
