Paladins lose Schuermann
Furman freshman pitcher Grant Schuermann will miss the rest of the season with an arm injury, coach Ron Smith confirmed Monday night on his radio call-in show.

Schuermann left in the third inning of Saturday's game with East Tennessee State. Smith said the left-hander from Cincinnati had not experienced any arm issues previously.

Smith said he had yet to receive the final diagnosis of Schuermann's injury, but said preliminary reports were not good. Smith suggested that if Schuermann has Tommy John surgery he likely would be redshirted for the 2016 season.

Schuermann had a 3-2 record and 6.06 ERA this season. He has pitched  49 innings in 12 appearances, including eight starts. He had 11 walks and 26 strikeouts.

Smith said sophomore right-hander Matthew Quarles (5-1, 4.83) would replace Schuermann in the weekend rotation. Quarles, out of Emerald High in Greenwood, has made had several good starts in midweek games.

Furman, 22-25 overall, is 9-9 in the Southern Conference and tied for fifth place with six league games remaining. After a Wednesday home game with Charleston Southern the Paladins play three league games at Wofford over the weekend.
