Planning your weekend, April 1-3

Conference play continues in most conferences and begins in the Atlantic Sun Conference this weekend.

* One of the most important matchups this weekend is North Greenville's trip to play Belmont Abbey. The teams share first place in Conference Carolinas with 14-1 league records.

* USC Upstate carries a five-game winning streak into its opening A-Sun series at New Jersey Tech in Newark. NJIT is in its first season of Atlantic Sun play.

* Clemson tries to regain momentum in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a home series against Pittsburgh. The Tigers struggled on the mound and in the field in being swept at Miami last weekend. Pitt has a 4-5 record in the ACC, but has recorded wins over Florida State and North Carolina.

* Winthrop plays host to Big South Conference leader Liberty, while Coastal Carolina and Gardner-Webb meet in Conway in a series involving teams tied for third place. Friday's series opener has been moved up to a 2 p.m. start because of weather concerns.

* College of Charleston, coming off a 13-inning 6-5 victory over South Carolina to extend its winning streak to six games, returns to Colonial Athletic Association play with a visit to Elon. The Cougars are atop the CAA standings.

* Furman, in a four-way tie for first place after one week of Southern Conference play, travels to Johnson City, Tenn., to face East Tennessee State.

* USC Sumter places its 13-game winning streak and first-place status in NJCAA Region 10 at risk with a home series against fourth-place USC Lancaster. Another important Region 10 series has second-place Spartanburg Methodist playing host to third-place Pitt CC.

 * Benedict, coming off a pair of no-hitters in a Tuesday win over Morris, plays host to SIAC and state foe Claflin for a three-game series. Claflin swept Morehouse last week while Benedict had its three-game series at Albany State washed out.

* The only other meeting of two state teams this weekend is Southern Wesleyan's Conference Carolinas trip to Erskine.

* Peach Belt Conference leader USC Aiken has a series at fourth-place UNC Pembroke. Lander, one game behind the Pacers in the standings, has a series at North Georgia.

 * Eight of the 11 teams in the South Atlantic Conference are with 2 1/2 games of each other in the standings. The Coker at Lenoir-Rhyne and Newberry at Carson-Newman series could help break up that log jam.

* USC Beaufort, ranked sixth nationally in the NAIA and in first place in The Sun Conference, has an important series at second-place St. Thomas. The Sand Sharks have a two-game lead over St. Thomas.

* South Carolina began its Top Ten showdown with SEC East revival Vanderbilt on Thursday night. The series continues through Saturday in Nashville.
