Planning your week, April 18-24

While conference play is heating up in NCAA Division I, it's winding down on other levels. Conference Carolinas, The South Atlantic Conference and NJCAA Region 10 all finish league play next weekend.

* Clemson tries to right the ship during a 13-game homestand, which begins Tuesday with a visit from Georgia. The Tigers beat the Bulldogs in Athens earlier this month with a six-run ninth inning. Fun fact:: Georgia's last 20 home runs have been solo shots.

After Georgia, the Tigers play host to Georgia Tech hoping to climb out of fifth place in the ACC Atlantic Division.

* There are three in-state matchups on Tuesday's schedule. North Geenville and Charleston Southern have added a game at the Lexington Sports Complex. Elsewhere, Anderson is at Southern Wesleyan, Benedict visits North Greenville and Furman is at USC Upstate.

* South Carolina pays its third 2016 visit to Greenville's Fluor Field this week, meeting Furman on Wednesday in what the Paladins again are using to cap their annual cancer battle fund-raiser.

There are six other in-state matchups on Wednesday: Charleston Soutthern at USC Upstate, College of Charleston at Coastal Carolina, Newberry at Lander, Voorhees at Benedict (for a doubleheader), Winthrop at Wofford and USC Sumter at the Anderson JV team (another twinbill).

* Barring some weather-related hijinks, the Conference Carolinas regular-season title will go to the winner of North Greenville's three-game visit to Erskine next weekend. The teams share first place with 20-4 league marks. Belmont Abbey is a game back, but would need to sweep fourth-place Mount Olive and Erskine/North Greenville split two games with a third game being rained out to move into first.

* USC Beaufort, which wrapped up The Sun Conference regular-season title over the weekend, could be in for a  Top 5 matchup of NAIA squads in Hardeeville next weekend when Georgia Gwinnett visits. Georgia Gwinnett was No. 1 in the previous three NAIA polls, but lost a pair of midweek games to No. 4 Faulkner and No. 8 Auburn Montgomery.  The Grizzlies were 42-2 prior to those two losses.

* South Carolina faces a a challenge as it tries to break out of its recent offensive doldrums. Missouri has two of the SEC's most talented pitchers in Tanner Houck and Reggie McClain.

* Coastal Carolina has built a three-game lead in the Big South Conference and could pad that with a good weekend. Second-place High Point visits. Campbell and Longwood, which share third place, play each other.

* The Citadel, coming off being swept three games at Wofford, gets no breaks in its next Southern Conference series. The Bulldogs play host to first-place Western Carolina.

* Furman also has a stiff SoCon challenge, traveling to third-place Mercer.

* Wofford looks poised to rise in the standings if it doesn't stumble in a series at last-place VMI.

* The schedule would appear to favor Spartanburg Methodist as it tries to wrap up the regular-season title in NJCAA Region 10. The Pioneers visit last-place Louisburg. USC Sumter and USC Lancaster, on paper, face stiffer tests in Guilford Tech (home) and Florence-Darlington Tech (road), respectively.

* Coker closes out its final regular-season of the Dave Schmotzer era with a home series against Newberry. The teams are among five teams sharing third place in the South Atlantic Conference standings with 11-10 records with one weekend remaining. Schmotzer, the only head coach the Cobras have had, has announced he is retiring from coaching after this season.

* Anderson appears a longshot at best to make the eight-team tournament field. The Trojans must sweep Lenoir-Rhyne and hope a couple of other teams ahead of them get swept.
