Planning your weekend, April 15-17

Conference races are heating up -- and already red-hot in some cases -- in all divisions where S.C. teams are involved.  This weekend there are many matchups with direct bearing on league leads.

* Benedict and Claflin play in the HBCU Classic at 7 p.m. Friday at Fluor Field in Greenville as part of the Greenville Drive's Jackie Robinson Day activities. Both teams head to Georgia for three-game road series beginning Saturday.

* Charleston Southern and UNC Asheville are tied for last place in the Big South Conference. The  teams go head-to-head in Charleston this weekend.

* Clemson trails Florida State, Louisville and N.C. State in the ACC Atlantic Division standings at the midpoint of its ACC schedule. The Tigers can begin a move up the standings this weekend with a visit to Louisville. The Tigers also have league series remaining with Florida State and N.C. State, so they control their division title fate.

* Furman's pitchers had better mind their P's and Q's this weekend when UNC Greensboro visits for Southern Conference action. The Spartans lead the NCAA with a .356 team batting average. The Paladins have won three of their last four games overall and are 3-3 in the SoCon.

* The logjam at the top of Conference Carolinas may begin to break up this weekend. Belmont Abbey, Erskine and North Greenville share the lead with 18-3 record. Erskine plays a three-game series at Belmont Abbey, while North Greenville is at fifth-place Barton.

* There's also a tight race in the Peach Belt Conference. Augusta and Columbus State are percentage points ahead of Lander at USC Aiken. Augusta and Columbus state play each other this weekend. Lander hosts UNC Pembroke and USC Aiken steps out of conference to play nationally ranked Florida Southern.

* First place in NJCAA Region 10 also is at stake when first-place USC Sumter (15-5 region) plays a four-game set at Spartanburg Methodist (14-6).

 * Presbyterian swept Winthrop in its most recent Big South Conference series.  Coach Elton Pollock's squad visits first-place Coastal Carolina this weekend.

* Perhaps the only good thing about South Carolina's 15-0 beating at the hands of North Carolina in Charlotte on Wednesday was that it wasn't a Southeastern Conference game. The Gamecocks return to SEC play -- where they have a two-game lead in the East Division -- with a weekend trip to play Athens. The Bulldogs have one of the league's most talented starters in Robert Tyler.

* USC Beaufort tries to retain first place in The Sun Conference with a three-game visit to second-place Southeastern. The Sand Sharks have a three-game lead over the Fire and need one win to be assured of returning home with the lead.

* USC Upstate's bid to climb out of the Atlantic Sun Conference standings must begin with a home series against first-place Kennesaw State.

* Wofford ended a recent slide with a win at Winthrop on Wednesday. The Terriers try to begin a climb toward the top of the SoCon standings with a weekend home series against an also-hungry The Citadel squad.
