Planning your weekend, April 8-10

Even though we're in the middle of conference play, one of the most important series in the state this weekend will be a nonconference matchup.

Cal Santa Barbara visits College of Charleston for three games beginning Friday.  Santa Barbara has the No. 10 RPI in the latest unofficial ratings at WarrenNolan.com, while College of Charleston is No. 13.  With the bulk of the NCAA Tournament's 16 regional host spots usually going to schools from the "power conferences," this weekend series could help give either Santa Barbara or Charleston a leg up on contending for a regional host spot by a mid-major.

Earlier this week, PerfectGame.org projected Cal Santa Barbara as the No. 7 national seed.

Elsewhere:

* Clemson visits Duke. On paper it appears Clemson should win the series but Duke won two of three at Georgia Tech last weekend and the Tigers are coming off two straight weekends where the starting pitching was average at best.

* South Carolina has a home series with a potent Tennessee squad. The Gamecocks went 4-2 in six-game span of SEC games at Mississippi and Vanderbilt and share first place in the SEC East with national No. 1 Florida.

* Furman steps out of Southern Conference play to visit a West Virginia team coached by former Clemson player Randy Mazey.

* North Greenville and Erskine are tied for second place in Conference Carolinas as the league schedule winds down. The Crusaders play host to Limestone while Erskine is at Emmanuel.

* No. 5 USC Aiken, the Peach Belt Conference leader,  plays its closest league rival in a weekend series across the Savannah River at Augusta. The Jaguars are battling Lander for second place in the Peach Belt. Lander is at Georgia College this weekend.

* Winthrop swept then-Big South Conference leader Liberty last weekend and tries to maintain that momentum with a visit to Presbyterian.

* Newberry has struggled in South Atlantic Conference play in recent weeks, falling into a fourth-place tie with Coker and Carson-Newman. The Wolves are a game behind Tusculum and Lincoln Memorial, but could gain ground on Tusculum with a head-to-head series win this weekend.

* USC Sumter risks the lead in NJCAA Region 10 with a visit to Pitt CC, which shares third place with Florence-Darlington Tech. The Stingers are at home against second-place Spartanburg Methodist.

* Voorhees hasn't won more than 10 games in a season since 2008, but that's the carrot for the Tigers (10-13) as they visit Selma for three games this weekend.

* Claflin and Paine, a half-game apart in the SIAC East Division standings, meet for three games at Mirmow Field in Orangeburg.

* The Citadel tries to snap a five-game losing streak with a home series against Southern Conference leader UNC Greensboro.  The Bulldogs are one game behind the Spartans in the standings.

* USC Beaufort tries to move closer to The Sun Conference regular-season title with a home series against third-place Webber International.
