Friday's highlights, Feb. 24

Game of the day
Clemson and Elon went 13 innings before the Tigers left Doug Kingsmore Stadium with a 1-0 victory.  Three Tigers pitchers struck out 23 and walked none. Seth Beer, who just missed hitting a pair of home runs earlier in the game, lashed a bases-loaded single to end the game. Beer has reached base in 65 consecutive games dating to last season. Of the 67 games he has played for the Tigers, he failed to reach base only in his second career game.

Across the state
* South Carolina's pitchers combined to strike out 16 batters, but the Gamecocks struggled to put away Wright State, 4-3. Starter Clarke Schmidt struck out 11 in 6 1/3 innings, but hit four batters and left the game in a 3-3 tie because an error led to all three Raiders runs. Madison Stokes, who made two errors at shortstop, homered as part of his second straight multi-hit game.

* The Citadel got its first victory of the season. J.P. Sears struck out 12 batters -- nine looking -- in going seven innings of a 4-0 win over Delaware State.

* Hunter Lipscomb's three-run homer in the eighth inning. boosted Winthrop to its fourth straight win, 4-2 at Kennesaw State.

* J.J. Shimko had three of his team's 17 hits and drove in four runs as USC Upstate beat Georgetown, 12-0. Three Spartans pitchers combined to allow six hits and strike out five while walking none.

* Alex Cunningham pitched eight shutout innings and Bobby Holmes left the bases loaded in the ninth inning as Coastal Carolina beat Ball State, 1-0.

* Erven Roper singled, doubled, walked and scored a run as College of Charleston edged Cincinnati.

* Presbyterian rallied from a 5-1 deficit to beat Stony Brooke, 7-6, in an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

* Walk-off wins were all the rage in the Peach Belt Conference. Francis Marion scored two runs in the ninth to upend Augusta, 2-1, in Florence. Antonio Pino and Harris Wright had RBI singles. Chance Ducharme had another good start for the Patriots, striking out 12 in 7 1/3 innings.

* USC Aiken surrendered a 2-0 lead to Young Harris in the top of the ninth, but won 3-2 when Conner Durden delivered a one-out single in the bottom of the inning.

* Chase Watts had a pair of homers and stole as base as Erskine dispatched Pfeiffer, 7-3.

* Mike Batten struck out 10 in eight shutout innings as Southern Wesleyan surprised North Greenville, 5-2 in a Conference Carolinas opener.

* Lander ripped five homers in its 7-3 win at Montevallo.

* Chase Allen and Brandon Etheridge homered in a four-run eighth inning as Limestone rallied to beat Barton, 8-7.

* Jon Koski and Thomas Lopez had two doubles apiece as Coker beat Tusculum, 10-6 in South Atlantic Conference action.

* Thomas Estopare had four hits and drove in six runs in the opener of USC Beaufort's doubleheader sweep of Warner.  That 15-12 win was followed by a 7-4 Sand Sharks win, when Bobby Wenthe hit a pair of home runs.

* Trejon Smith doubled and homered and Zack Kelly struck out nine in four innings of relief as Newberry cruised over Golden-Beacom.

* Kip Brandenburg homered twice, but Spartanburg Methodist lost to Roane State, 7-6.

Elsewhere:
* Former USC Sumter coach Tom Fleenor's 22-ranked (NCAA DII) Lenoir-Rhyne team whipped Anderson, 9-0.
* Rock Hill native Sammy Taormina homered twice as Liberty beat Maryland Baltimore County, 8-5, in a game played in Lexington. Those teams are joined by Kansas State and St. John's for more games there Saturday and Sunday.
* Former Florence-Darlington Tech pitcher David Parkinson retired the first 12 batters he faced as Mississippi beat UNC Wilmington, 7-2. Parkinson (2-0) struck out six for the second consecutive start.
* Ex-Clemson assistant Kevin O'Sullivan got his 400th career victory as Florida beat Miami, 1-0.
