Palmetto State Baseball team of the week, April 10-16: Furman

Furman (3-1 for the week)
(lost to USC Upstate; went 3-0 at Western Carolina)

The Paladins committed four errors, allowed seven unearned runs and bore a passing resemblance to the Bad News Bears in a 14-7 midweek loss to USC Upstate. The visiting Spartans scored the game's final eight runs. It was the Paladins' ninth straight loss. Six of the losses were conference games and five of those were by two runs or less.

So, Brett Harker's Paladins promptly went to Cullowhee and played three crackerjack games to sweep Western Carolina, which entered the weekend one game behind first-place Mercer in the Southern Conference.

Matthew Quarles capped off the series with a four-hit complete game on Saturday. He allowed one earned run, walked none and struck out eight.

The Paladins play host to Presbyterian Wednesday night to open a five-game homestand. The installation of 888 new -- purple, naturally -- chairback seats at Latham Stadium was completed last week.
