Thursday's highlights, April 13

Coastal Carolina 4, South Alabama 3, 10 innings

* Kevin Woodall's 13th home run of the season lifted Coastal Carolina (21-12-1, 9-3-1) over host South Alabama (20-14, 9-4) in the opener of a series matching the top two teams in the Sun Belt Conference East Division standings. The Chanticleers moved past USA into the division lead. The Jaguars scored three runs in the second, but Coastal evened things up in the fifth. Wood Myers had four hits for the Chanticleers, who outhit South Alabama 13-6.

Elsewhere around the Palmetto state
* Jason Costa's three-run home run in the sixth inning gave Furman (12-20, 2-8) the lead and the Paladins held on for a 6-5 win over Western Carolina (16-16, 7-3) in a SoCon series opener to snap a nine-game losing streak. Will Gaddis scattered 13 hits for the Paladins. The Catamounts had the potential tying run at third base when Furman first baseman  Brandon Elmy caught a line drive to end the game. Elmy and Carter Grote joined Costa in getting two hits apiece for the Paladins.

* Wofford (19-16, 4-3) roared back from an early three-run deficit and rolled to a 13-4 win at UNC Greensboro (21-12, 7-3) to open a southern Conference series. The Terriers scored five runs in the fourth, two in the seventh and three apiece in the eighth and ninth. Kody Ruedisili had three hits, four teammates added two hits apiece and Mack Nathanson had a two-run homer for Wofford.

* Winthrop (18-16, 6-4) pulled within a game of the lead in the Big South Conference with a 5-3 victory at first-place Liberty (20-12, 7-3) to open a three-game league series. Grant English had a single, a double and a walk and drove in two runs for the Eagles.

* J.P. Sears struck out 15 in eight shutout innings but Samford  (20-14, 3-5) scored a 1-0 walk-off win over The Citadel (10-21, 2-5) to open a Southern Conference series in Birmingham. Sears has a mind-boggling 87 strikeouts in 57 innings this season. Ben Peden singled and walked for The Bulldogs.

*  Ryan Shull's two-out single in the ninth game Longwood (12-20, 4-6) a walk-off 2-1 win over Presbyterian (18-18, 6-4) in the first game of a Big South Conference series. Brian Kehner pitched a complete game for the Blue Hose. T.J. Richardson singled in the PC run in the fourth. The Lancers tied the score in the sixth.

* Spencer Levine's two-run homer in the eighth allowed Florida Gulf Coast (27-9, 3-4) to rally for a 7-6 win over USC Upstate (15-21, 1-6) to open an Atlantic Sun Conference series. The Spartans trailed 2-0 and 5-2, but scored two runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to take a 6-5 lead. Russel Schwertfeger had two hits, stole two bases and scored three runs for the Spartans.

* Charleston Southern (16-17, 5-8) had six extra-base hits among its 14 safeties but suffered a 6-3 home loss to Gardner-Webb (17-16, 6-4) in Big South Conference action. Jason Miller had three singles and a triple and and Aaron Miller had two singles and a home for the Buccaneers, who have lost four straight games and seven of their last nine.
