USC ace Schmidt to miss rest of season

South Carolina junior right-hander Clarke Schmidt will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the remainder of the 2017 season.

Schmidt, who before the injury was a projected first-round pick in the June baseball draft, left his Thursday start against Florida because of soreness.

The Gamecocks, who have lost their last four SEC series, play host to East Division leader Kentucky beginning Friday.
