Four pitchers combined to shut out Clemson on six hits and N.C. State won the opener of a showdown series of top 10 teams, 4-0, in ACC play at Doug Kingsmore Stadium Friday night.
Brett Kinneman's one-out home run in the first inning provided the Wolfpack all the runs they needed. It was his 11th home run of the season.
It could have been worse. N.C. State had two runners thrown out at home and another gunned down at third.
Michael Bienlien went the first five innings for the Wolfpack.
Grayson Byrd had two hits for the Tigers, who fell even with the Wolfpack in the ACC Atlantic Division standings at 3-1. Clemson (16-1) had an eight-game winning streak snapped in suffering its first home loss in 15 games this season.
Game 2 of the series is at 4 p.m. Saturday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Elsewhere
* Coastal Carolina scored three runs -- two unearned -- in the third inning and Jason Bilous made that stand up for a 3-1 win at Arkansas State in the Chanticleers' opener of Sun Belt Conference play. Bilous (3-0) struck out nine in six innings. Lee Sponseller and Keaton Weisz had two hits apiece for Coastal.
* Friday night ace Adam Hill struggled with his control and Florida took advantage in beating South Carolina, 7-3, at Founders Park to open the three-game SEC series. Hill walked five and was lifted in the fifth inning after throwing 98 pitches and trailing, 3-1. Down 5-1, USC got a home run from Chris Cullen in the seventh inning and had the potential tieing run at the plate in the eighth but was unable to get more. The Gators iced the game with a two-run homer in the ninth. Both Gamecocks manager Mark Kingston and right fielder Carlos Cortes were ejected by the home plate umpire. Game 2 of the series is at 4 p.m. Saturday.
* Carter Sisk pitched a five-hit complete game as College of Charleston beat Kansas State, 8-0, to open a nonconference series at Manhattan. Danny Wondrack and Cameron Garrett had back-to-back home runs in the eighth inning.
* A nine-run seventh inning turned the game around as Winthrop beat Presbyterian, 15-9, in the opener of a Big South Conference series in Rock Hill. Presbyterian scored seven runs in the third and held the lead until the Eagles' late outburst. Matthew Mulkey and Cale Gibson had three hits apiece for the Eagles. Nick Guimbarda had a homer among his three hits for PC.
* Blake Whitney struck out nine in eight innings and Mason Stewart had three singles and three RBIs as USC Upstate cruised past Ohio, 8-1, to open their series.
* Ben Anderson and Bret Huebner had three hits apiece as Furman beat Harvard, 7-6, to salvage a doubleheader split with Harvard at Latham Stadium. The Crimson won the seven-inning opener, 6-2, behind the 11-strikeout complete game of Simon Rosenbluem-Larson.
* Erskine got a pair of wins over visiting Barton in Conference Carolinas play, 9-5 and 5-1. Chaz Davey got the Flying Fleet off to a good start with a home run to lead off the first in the opener. Lucas Coan scattered five hits and six walks and pitched a complete game in the nightcap.
* North Greenville got four home runs in a 13-6 pasting of King to open a Conference Carolinas series in Tigerville. Connor Grant, John Jones, Jack Morris and Daswon Price all connected for the Crusaders, who trailed 1-0 entering their first at-bat. North Greenville had 15 hits. Crusaders starter Garner allowed four hits and struck out six in six innings.
* Gage Taylor's third hit of the game gave Francis Marion a 5-4 walkoff win over Young Harris in Peach Belt Conference play. The Patriots scored four runs over their final three at-bats for the victory.
