Friday's S.C. college baseball roundup, April 27

Adam Scott out 17 batters, but Wofford (29-14, 10-3) needed a two-run ninth-inning double from Cody Miller to beat UNC Greensboro (29-11, 10-3), 2-1, in the opener of their series in Spartanburg Friday night and tie the Spartans for first place in the Southern Conference standings.

UNCG plated a run in the second on a suicide squeeze and starter Matt Frisbee made it stand up until the ninth, striking out 11 and allowing four hits.

Mack Nathanson drew a one-out walk in the Wofford ninth and Greensboro went to reliever Jack Maynard.  Andrew Orzel reached on a single and Brett Rodriguez coaxed a walk to load the bases.  Miller then connected for the game-winner. Orzel had three of Wofford's five hits.

Elsewhere:
* South Carolina (25-17, 10-9) trailed Vanderbilt (24-17, 10-9) by seven runs after three innings, but scored two runs in the fifth and six in the sixth for an 8-7 victory to open their SEC series in Nashville.

The Commodores roughed up USC starter Logan Chapman for eight hits and seven runs, knocking him out of the game with two outs in the third.

T.J. Shook, Eddy Demurias and Sawyer Bridges combined to hold the Commodores hitless the rest of the way.

L.T. Tolbert's two-run single tied the score at 7-7 in the sixth and Carlos Cortes stole home for the go-ahead run when Vanderbilt whiffed on a tag at first during a rundown involving Tolbert.

Justin Row had three doubles for Carolina, which has won five straight and goes for a series win Saturday.

* Clemson (32-11, 15-7) pushed its winning streak to six games with a 3-2 victory at Virginia (24-18, 9-13) to open that ACC series. Seth Beer's 12th homer of the season gave Clemson a 1-0 lead in the second, but the Cavaliers responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. In the fourth, Kyle Wilkie singled in the tying run and Sam Hall drove in the third run with a groundout.  Jacob Hennessy pitched the first five innings and Spencer Strider, Ryan Miller and Ryley Gilliam combined for four innings of one-hit relief.

* North Greenville (41-5) rode a 12-strikeout complete game from Tucker Burgess (14-1) and beat Erskine, 7-0, to move into the third round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament. Friday's games were played at Elon College because of field conditions at Burlington Athletic Stadium. John Jones and Utah Jones had two hits apiece for the Crusaders. The Crusaders will play the winner of Saturday's Belmont Abbey-King game, which was postponed on Friday, in a semifinal game on Sunday.

* Anderson (24-27) upended top seeded Catawba, 4-1, in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament in Kodak, Tenn.  Austin Todd pitched a three-hit complete game for the Trojans, who will play either Carson-Newman or Lincoln Memorial on Saturday.

* Kieton Rivers, Keaton Weisz and Cameron Pearcey homered for Coastal Carolina (29-14, 15-4) in a 14-4 win over Louisiana Monroe (18-23, 7-12) to open a Peach Belt Conference series at Springs Brooks Stadium.

* Bradley Dixon singled twice and drove in three runs as College of Charleston (28-15, 10-6) snapped a six-game losing streak with a 5-3 win over Delaware (22-18, 7-6) in Colonial Athletic Association play at Patriots Point. The Cougars were outhit 10-5. Nathan Ocker got his 12th career save for the College.

* Lander (15-31, 8-20) hit four home runs and coasted to a 14-6 win over North Georgia (28-17), 15-10) in a Peach Belt Conference series opener at Dolny Stadium. Carson Jones, Alex Conaway, Brice Kirven and Conner Davis went deep for the Bearcats.

* Conner Durden singled, homered and drove in three runs as USC Aiken (30-16, 21-7) won the opener of a Peach Belt Conference series at Flagler (29-19, 15-13) by an 8-3 score. Jose Bonilla also had two hits for the Pacers while starter Mitch Spence struck out eight in seven innings.

* Presbyterian (13-31, 6-13) lost its Big South Conference series opener at Radford (18-23, 9-10) in bizarre fashion. The Blue Hose took an 8-7 lead into the ninth, but allowed a bases-loaded single to tie the score. The winning run scored on a dropped infield popup.
