Wrapping up Friday's S.C. college baseball, April 13

Sims Griffith's two-run home run capped a three-run sixth inning and led Furman (17-17, 3-4) to a 4-3 victory over Wofford (23-12, 4-3) in the opener of a Southern Conference series in Greenville on Friday.

The teams were tied at 1-1 until the Furman outburst, which was aided by a Wofford error. The Terriers scored two runs in the eighth, but left the potential tying run on base. A Furman double play in the ninth ended the game.

Wofford had a pair of runners thrown out trying to score, one on a foul fly and another on a grounder back to the pitcher.

Logan Taplett had two hits and drove in two runs for Furman, which was outhit 13-7. McClain Bradley had three hits, while Lawson Hill scored two runs for Wofford.

The teams will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday. Game 1 will be televised on WMYA (Channel 40-1) in the Upstate of South Carolina.

Elsewhere:
* After scoring five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take an eight-run lead, Clemson (25-9, 10-6) seemed well on its way to victory over Miami (14-19, 8-8) in the opener of their ACC series. But the Hurricanes scored eight runs in the ninth and beat the Tigers in 12 innings. 12-11, at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Miami scored two runs in the top of the first inning, but Clemson responded with a Chris Williams grand slam in the bottom of the stanza. The Canes scored once in the second, but again were doubled in the bottom of the inning on a two-run blast by Patrick Cromwell.

The score remained 6-3 until the eighth, when Cromwell had a two-run blast off the roof of the batting cages as part of a five-run inning.

Miami scored eight runs on seven hits, an error and a walk in the ninth. With two outs, Hunter Tackett doubled off Kier Meredith's glove at the center-field wall for the final two runs.

In the 12th, Miami got a one-out double into the right-field corner from Alex Toral and Kam Lane followed with an RBI single.

Clemson got the potential tying run to second in the ninth when Drew Donathan and Kyle Wilkie drew walks. Cromwell struck out after fouling off two bunt attempts. Meredith followed with a sharp liner to third and Wilkie was doubled off first to end the game.

Miami had lost nine of its previous 10 games prior to Friday.

The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, with the first game set for 1 p.m.

* Evan Sisk struck out six and didn't allow an earned run in six innings as College of Charleston (26-9, 8-2) beat Northeastern, 4-1, and moved ahead of the Huskies into first place in the CAA standings.  Luke Manzo had two hits and Bradley Dixon drove in two runs for the Cougars. Carter Love retired all nine batters he faced to get the save.

* Nate Pawelczyk allowed three hits and struck out eight Radford batters over seven inning as Winthrop (17-18) won the opener of a Big South Conference series, 6-3, in Rock Hill. Brandon Fite and Tyler Halstead had three hits apiece for the Eagles.

* Coastal Carolina (24-12, 10-3) fell to Troy, 4-2, in the opener of their Sun Belt Conference series. The Chanticleers tied the game at 2-2 on a double by Matt Beaird in the top of the eighth, but the Trojans scored twice in the bottom of the inning. Coastal is one game ahead of Coastal Carolina and South Alabama in the East Division.

* North Greenville (33-6, 16-3) held off Limestone (18-21, 9-10) in the opener of a Conference Carolinas series in Tigerville as Tucker Burgess picked up his 11th win of the season. John Jones had two doubles for the Crusaders. Zach Piazza homered twice and drove in all four Saints runs.

* Ben Peden singled, doubled, walked and drove in three runs as The Citadel (13-20) snapped an eight-game losing streak with an 11-3 win over Towson in nonconference play in Charleston.

* Anderson (17-23, 9-13) rallied from a 10-0 deficit after three innings to upend Mars Hill, 15-12. Seven Trojans had two hits apiece for the Trojans, who scored in their final six innings.

* R.J. Ball's pinch-hit grand slam in a six-run eighth inning helped Coker (14-22, 4-18) outlast Tusculum, 16-14, to open a South Atlantic Conference series in Hartsville. Thomas Lopez also homered for the Cobras.

* Tee DuBose had three hits and Gage Taylor made a leaping catch at the wall for the final out as Francis Marion (15-25, 7-18) upended second-place Columbus State, 8-7, in Peach Belt Conference play. Taylor also singled, doubled and drove in two runs.

* Charles McGinnis' sixth-inning homer was the margin of victory as USC Beaufort (18-23, 4-13)  topped Ave Maria, 4-2. to avoid falling into the cellar in The Sun Conference.

* Benedict (16-12) tuned up for a weekend SIAC series with Paine by beating Morris (1-13) twice, 8-5 and 9-4.  Javier Santiago singled and homered and David White Jr. drove in two runs and was one of five Tigers to get two hits in the nightcap.

* South Carolina and Arkansas were rained out and will play a pair of seven-inning games on Saturday to complete their SEC series.
