South Carolina (28-18, 13-10) continued its late-season surge Saturday with a 11-6 over No. 4 Mississippi (35-13, 12-11) to clinch a Southeastern Conference series victory at Founders Park.
The Gamecocks scored three runs in the third, five in the fourth and two in the fifth as they won for the eighth time in nine games and for the seventh time in their last eight SEC games.
Adam Hill had his most effective start in several weeks and was supported by a 14-hit attack. Carlos walked, singled, doubled twice and drove in four runs. Matt Williams joined Cortes in getting three hits, including a home run to open the USC scoring.
The Rebels made things interesting with a five-run eighth.
USC, which goes for a sweep at noon Sunday, is in fourth place in the overall SEC standings. The top four teams in the conference get first-round byes for the tournament.
Elsewhere
* Mike Martin became the winningest college baseball coach in NCAA history with Florida State's 13-inning 3-2 victory over Clemson (34-12, 17-8) to open an ACC series at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
His 1,976 career wins moved him past Augie Garrido, who died earlier this season.
The Seminoles (32-14, 14-10) took a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning, but Clemson scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to tie the score.
Steven Wells hit a two-out home run in the 13th to give the Seminoles the lead. Logan Davidson led off the Clemson 13th with a walk. Seth Beer's grounder to second was thrown away, but Davidson was thrown out trying to reach third on a calling that was upheld -- or at least not overturned -- after a video review.
Chris Williams popped out and Kyle Wilkie flied out to end the game. C.J. Van Eyk pitched 6 1/3 innings of relief for the Seminoles.
Davidson had two hits for Clemson, which was outhit 15-6. The Tigers' lead over N.C. State in the Atlantic Division fell to 1.5 games. The Wolfpark are playing a nonconference series this weekend.
* Joey Mundy singled twice, homered and drove in four runs as College of Charleston (32-15, 14-6) won its fifth straight Colonial Athletic Association game, 13-5, over Towson (12-35, 5-12). Dupree Hart, Luke Morgan and Logan McRae also had three hits apiece for the Cougars. Morgan homered and drove in three runs. Graham McLarty pitched the first six innings for the College.
* Behind Alec Cargin's two-run pinch single in the 12th inning, Wofford (31-17, 11-6) moved back into a second-place tie with Samford (26-22, 11-6) in the Southern Conference with a 6-4 victory in Birmingham. The Terriers had leads of 3-0 and 4-2, but the Bulldogs tied the score with two runs in the ninth. Both teams threatened in extra innings. In the 12th, Colin Davis drew a one-out walk and went to third on Lawson Hill's single and error. Cargin followed with his single through the drawn-in infield near second base. Samford's leadoff batter in the 12th was hit by a pitch, but doubled off on a lineout. The Bulldogs got a walk and a single before Mack Nathanson made a diving catch of a looper in left field to end the game. Alex Malsch, Andrew Orzel and Brett Rodriguez had two hits apiece for the Terriers.
* Louisiana (28-20, 14-9) clinched a series win and moved into first place in the Sun Belt Conference's West Division with a 5-1 win against East leader Coastal Carolina (31-16, 17-6). The Chanticleers' only run came on Zach Biermann's sacrifice fly in the first inning. Kieton Rivers singled and doubled for Coastal. The Chanticleers had won 11 consecutive Sun Belt series -- the last four last season and the first seven of 2018 -- before Saturday's loss.
* Western Carolina (5-39, 3-17) got a four-hit complete game from Chase Walter and snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over Furman (22-24, 7-10) to even their Southern Conference series at 1-1. Justice Bigbie hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Walter made it stand up. He walked two and struck out eight. Bradon Elmy singled, walked, was hit by a pitch and scored the Furman run.
* John Jones went 6-for-6 with two doubles and a homer to drive in three runs for North Greenville (44-8) as the Crusaders beat Nova Southeastern (32-13), 13-11, in 10 innings in the opener of a doubleheader. The Sharks took a series by win by taking Game 2, 5-3, on a homer by Jake Anchia in the bottom of the seventh. Connor Grant had two hits and scored twice for the Crusaders.
* Ryan Rizk's two-out homer in the bottom of the 13th gave Charleston Southern (14-32, 5-15) a 4-3 victory over Winthrop (21-24, 13-7) to even their Big South Conference series at 1-1. Josh Litchfield singled, doubled, walked and drove in two runs for the Buccaneers. Mitch Spires homered, singled three time and walked twice for Winthrop. Teammate Tyler Halstead singled twice, homered and drove in two runs.
* Mitch Spence allowed three hits and struck out 11 over six inings for USCAiken (32-17) in a 6-2 win over Catawba (30-24). Joey Smithers had three hits and Chandler Rogers had two hits and two RBIs for the Pacers.
* Claflin (17-32) was eliminated from the SIAC Tournament with a 14-7 loss to Kentucky State. Craig Hopkins singled, doubled twice, tripled and drove in two runs for the Panthers.
NJCAA Region 10 Tournament
Top-seeded Florence-Darlington Tech (42-11) fell behind by four runs early but bounced back for a 7-4 win over Louisburg (31-21) on the opening day of the double-elimination event at Lexington County Baseball Stadium.
Fifth-seeded Louisburg had reached the game by upending No. 4 USC Salkehatchie (24-30), 16-8, in a game halted after eight innings because of the margin.
No. 6 USC Lancaster (22-21) beat a pair of higher-seeded teams to move into the winners' bracket meeting with Tech at 4:30 p.m. Sunday. The Lancers scored two runs in the top of the ninth and held to beat No. 3 Spartanburg Methodist (28-25), 5-4, in their first game. Lancaster jumped on No. 2 seed USC Sumter (31-21) early and coasted to a 12-3 victory in a game stopped after seven innings before of the run rule.
The tournament continues with four more games today.
