Sunday's S.C. college baseball roundup, May 6

Clemson (35-12, 18-8) scored in its first five innings and sailed to a 12-7 victory over Florida State (32-15, 14-11) at Doug Kingsmore Stadium Sunday to even their ACC series at 1-1.

The Seminoles hit a pair of solo home runs in the top of the first, but Clemson answered with two runs on a Patrick Cromwell single in the first and one in the second for a 3-2 lead.

After FSU tied it with another homer in the third, Clemson scored five runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by Grayson Byrd's three-run homer.

Chris Williams and Seth Beer also homered for the Tigers, who outhit FSU 13-8.

Game 3 is set for 7 p.m. Monday. It will be carried on ESPN2.

Elsewhere:
* Mississippi (36-13, 13-11) scored a run in the 10th inning and South Carolina (28-19, 13-11) left the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning, giving the Rebels a 6-5 victory to avoid being swept in the SEC series.

The Rebels hit four solo home runs, the last two wiping out a 5-3 USC lead built on solo homers by Hunter Taylor and Carlos Cortes.

Taylor and Jacob Olson had three hits apiece and Madison Stokes and Jonah Bride added two each for the Gamecocks, who left 13 runners on base.

* Coastal Carolina (32-16, 18-6) jumped on Louisiana (28-21, 14-10) for two runs in the first inning and two in the second and rolled to a 10-3 victory to salvage Game 3 of their Sun Belt Conference series. Zach Biermann singled, homered and drove in four runs fore the Chanticleers.

* Wofford (31-8-18, 11-7) dropped a game behind Samford (27-22, 12-6) for second place in the Southern Conference with a 5-4 loss in the rubber game of the series in Birmingham. The Bulldogs scored three runs in the first inning and Wofford never could catch up. Mack Nathanson doubled and homered for the Terriers. Lawson Hill and McClain Bradley added two singles apiece.

* College of Charleston (32-16, 14-7) was unable to complete a second straight Colonial Athletic Association sweep, losing to Towson (13-35, 6-12), 5-3. Ari Sechopoulos had two doubles to drive in two runs and Logan McRae added two singles for the Cougars, who had a five-game conference winning streak snapped.

* Western Carolina (6-39, 4-17) shut out Furman (7-11, 22-25) until the ninth inning and won the rubber game of the Southern Conference series, 5-2. Deon Sanders had a two-run homer to account for Furman's scoring.

* Derek Horton led off the ninth inning with a home run for Charleston Southern (15-31, 6-15), giving the Buccaneers a 2-1 victory over Winthrop (21-25, 13-8) and a 2-1 Big South Conference series win. Horton also singled and Josh Litchfield had two singles and a double for CSU.  Dillon Morton and Jake Sullivan had two hits apiece for Winthrop, which lost in walk-off fashion for the second consecutive day.

* East Tennessee State (24-19, 9-9) scored four runs in the first inning and coasted to an 11-5 win over The Citadel (17-28, 6-12) to avoid a Southern Conference series sweep.  Bryce Leasure singled, tripled and drove in two runs and Taylor McCarthy homered for the Bulldogs.

* Six USC Aiken (33-17) pitchers combined for a three-hit shutout with 14 strikeouts as the Pacers ended the regular season with an 8-0 victory over Emmanuel. Conner Durden doubled, homered, walked and drove in three runs and Jose Bonilla had three hits and scored two runs for the Pacers.

NJCAA Region 10 Tournament
* Florence-Darlington Tech (43-11) moved into the championship round of the tournament with a come-from-behind 5-4 win over USC Lancaster (22-22) at Lexington County Baseball Stadium.

The Stingers fell behind 2-0 in the third inning and rallied for a 3-2 lead only to have the Lancers go ahead 4-3. FD Tech scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to move into Monday's 7:30 p.m. championship game. A Stingers loss on Monday would force another game Tuesday afternoon.

USC Lancaster moved into Monday's first game, a 3 p.m. meeting with USC Sumter (33-21). The Fire Ants took a five-run lead into the ninth inning against Spartanburg Methodist (29-26), but got the final out of a 7-6 victory with the potential tying run on second base.

Earlier in the day, Spartanburg Methodist avoided elimination with a 7-5 victory over Louisburg.  USC Sumter had stayed alive by eliminating USC Salkehatchie (24-31), 12-3.
