Friday's college baseball roundup, Feb. 1

(I won 't have the time to do a roundup every day, but will try to do it when I can)

Lander struggled to a 16-35 record last season. The 2019 season is only one game old, but coach Jason Burke's Bearcats already have reason to feel good about what's ahead.

Lander knocked off preseason No. 2 Tampa, 6-2, at George Steinbrenner Field in Tampa on Friday. The Bearcats led 3-0 through five innings, then answered Tampa's two-run sixth with a three-run seventh.

Ward Betts and Josh Gregory had two hits apiece and Roury Glanton homered for Lander, which has 18 newcomers on the roster.

There's little time for celebration. The Bearcats face preseason No. 1 North Greenville in Tampa on Saturday. The Crusaders are smarting from an 11-inning 7-4 loss to St. Leo on Friday. NGU was unable to hold a 4-2 ninth-inning lead.

Elsewhere
* Erskine swept Queens, 17-3 and 7-2. The Flying Fleet had 17 hits in the opener, with Corey Everett and Antonio Falbo getting three apiece., Nick Vella had four hits in the nightcap.

* Dillon Carpenter hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning and Anderson never trailed in an 8-6 win over King. Logan Jackson singled, tripled and drove in four runs. Trojans starter Will Gee struck out eight in six innings.

* Craig Hopkins' ninth-inning single lifted Claflin to a 13-12 victory over Southern Wesleyan in a back-and-forth game played at Sparrow Stadium in Florence. Southern Wesleyan five runs in the top of the first inning, but the Panthers responded by taking a 12-6 lead after five innings. The Warriors scored three runs in the seventh and three in the eighth to tie the score. Edzaviah Paul led off the bottom of the ninth with a single. Pinch-runner Tavion Towers went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Hopkins' knock to left field. Clyde Parker had three hits for Claflin, while Bryson Fowler had three hits for the Warriors.

* Later in the day, Francis Marion knocked Southern Wesleyan to 0-2 with an 11-1 victory. Cole Hinnant had three hits and three RBIs for the Patriots. Southern Wesleyan pitchers issued 15 walks.

*  USC Aiken broke a 2-2 tie with four runs in the fifth and held on to beat Lincoln Memorial 6-3. Joey Smithers had two hits, including a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first, for the Pacers.

* USC Beaufort came within an out of a doubleheader sweep of Milligan, but had to settle for a split. The Sand Sharks won the first game, 8-7. Bobby Wenthe had two hits and drove in three runs for USCB in the opener. The Buffaloes scored three runs in the final at-bat of Game 1. Milligan won Game 2, 6-5, in eight innings. USCB had some bad luck when the pitcher and catcher got tangled with each other trying to field a two-out nubber down the first-base line as two runs scored during a three-run seventh.
