Leadoff batter Jeremy Whitehead reached base four times and scored twice Friday as North Greenville beat Newberry, 5-2, in the opener of a series at Dillard Field in Tigerville.
Whitehead had two singles, a triple and a walk for coach Landon Powell's squad, which broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run sixth.
John Michael Faile also had three hits and Elvin Rosa added two for North Greenville.
The Crusaders (2-2) got five innings of one-hit shutout ball from pitcher Ryan Kirk. Ethan Garner went the final four innings.
Aidan Baur had two hits for Newberry (3-2). The teams play a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday.
Elsewhere:
* Southern Wesleyan turned the game around with an 11-run seventh inning and beat Trinity Baptist, 13-2, to open a three-game series in Jacksonville. The Warriors (1-3) trailed 2-0 entering the seventh before erupting against the Trinity Baptist bullpen.
Devin Patrick and Sawyer Price drove in three runs apiece and Julio Justo had three of Southern Wesleyan's 13 hits.
Starter Aaron Bennett struck out seven in seven innings and Daniel Singleton struck out five in two innings of relief. The first box I saw listed Singleton as the winner. That should be corrected to be Bennett.
* Nick Vella homered as part of a five-run third inning as Erskine rolled past West Liberty, 9-2, at Grier Field to open a three-game series. Vella also had an RBI single for the Flying Fleet (5-1). Drew Yniesta and Corey Everett also had two hits and starter Alex Calvert (2-0) pitched five shutout innings.
* Craig Hopkins singled twice, homered and walked three times as Claflin hammered Salem, 17-4, to open a series at Historic Mirmow Field in Orangeburg. Geradic Dobbs singled twice, doubled and drove in five runs for the Panthers. (3-2). Winning pitcher Dillon Parker struck out nine in seven innings.
* Alex Moore (2-0) struck out 10 batters in six innings as Lander opened its home schedule with a 7-1 win over Millersville. Moore allowed a single and a walk. Josh Gregory homered and Vincent Addona singled twice and drove in two runs the the Bearcats (2-3).
* Luke Leisenring had two singles, a triple and a home run as USC Aiken (4-1) rallied twice to beat Shepherd, 7-5, in the opener of a three-game series at Roberto Hernandez Stadium. Leisenring's sixth-inning homer tied the game at 4-4 and Sean McQuillen singled in Trey Polewski later in the ining to give the Pacers the lead for good.
* Northwest Florida State, ranked No. 2 in Perfect Game USA's preseason junior college poll, scored the game's first nine runs and held on to beat Florence-Darlington Tech, 10-6, in the Capital City Bank Classic in Palatka, Fla. The Stingers (4-1) play two games on Saturday and another on Sunday.
* Coker dropped the opener of its home doubleheader with Kentucky Wesleyan, 17-7, before riding a four-run second inning and a strong start by Jon Koski to a 6-3 win in Game 2. Koski allowed eight hits and struck out eight in six innings. R.J. Ball had a grand slam for Coker (3-3-1) in Game 1.
* South Georgia used sixth-inning rallies in both games to sweep a pair at USC Salkehatchie, 8-6 and 10-4. Salkehatchie's Jordan Jeter doubled, homered and drove in three runs in the opener. The Indians (0-5) led 4-0 after an inning of Game 2.
* USC Beaufort was shut out in both ends of a doubleheader at Keiser, 10-0 and 2-0, to open its Sun Conference schedule. The Sand Sharks (4-3) got seven innings of one-hit shutout baseball from starter Eamonn Collins in Game 2 before Keiser scored two runs on three hits in the eighth.
* Matt Hilderbrandt singled and hit a two-run homer, but Limestone (2-4) lost its first-ever meeting with Winston-Salem State, 13-3.
