Arkansas is going to start renting repurposed shipping containers for additional premium seating at Baum Stadium, WholeHogSports.com reports.. (Arkansas Razorbacks photo) |
Back when I was in school in the 1960s, they started adding "portable" classrooms to handle increased enrollment.
Now, the "portable" concept is coming to college baseball.
The University of Arkansas is going to begin renting repurposed shipping containers for SEC games at Baum Stadium, according to WholeHogSports.com. The school is doing so to provide additional enhanced seating. The stadium has 32 luxury suites, but there has been no turnover in 10 years and there are dozens on a waiting list, the site reports.
The site reports containers have been used in other sports venues.
If this catches on, there should be no shortage of shipping containers. I've read that shipping containers sent to lesser developed countries are often abandoned and used for housing there because there is nothing to ship back in them. Urban legend? I don't know.
I'm not sure where there would be room for this concept at Clemson's Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
At South Carolina's Founders Park, beyond the right-field wall and behind the berm might be possibilities, but how would they impact stadium capacity and Fire Marshal regulations?
Would this work at some of the smaller Division I schools or at the Division II, NAIA or junior college level?
