Claflin to compete in independent schools tournament

Claflin (23-15) will be among five teams competing in a tournament for independent schools beginning Thursday at the Big League Camp on Lake James near Marion, N.C.

Each team will play the other four teams one time over a three-day period to  determine the seedings for Sunday's championship round. The team with the best record will receive a bye into the championship game.

The tournament is being organized by Winston-Salem State's baseball program.

Claflin has already played all four teams this season. The Panthers were 3-0 vs. Bluefield State, 2-0 vs. Virginia State, 2-1 vs. Salem and 0-3 vs. Winston-Salem State.

Claflin formerly competed in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, but moved to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association - which does not sponsor baseball - this spring.
