Saturday's S.C. college baseball roundup, April 27

Colin Davis' two-run double broke a 4-4 tie and Wofford (26-18, 8-5) went on to an 8-5 victory over first-place Samford (32-12, 12-2) at Russell C. King Field Saturday to even the Southern Conference series at 1-1.

The result snapped Samford's 10-game winning streak and, coupled with East Tennessee State's 6-3 loss to Mercer, allowed Wofford to take sole possession of second place in the SoCon.  Mercer moved past ETSU and is percentage points behind Wofford. The Terriers are 3 1/2 games behind Samford entering Sunday's series finale.

Samford took a 2-0 lead in the first inning before Wofford scored a run in the second, two in the third and one in the fifth to go up 4-2. The Bulldogs tied the score in the sixth.

After Davis' hit, Samford scored a run in the top of the eighth, but Wofford answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Hudson Byorick and John Dempsey had three hits apiece for Wofford.

Conference Tournaments
* Conference Carolinas - North Greenville (39-9) advanced to the championship round of the tournament with a 13-8 win over Mount Olive in Tigerville. The Crusaders had 13 hits and drew 11 walks. North Greenville plays Mount Olive, which beat Belmont Abbey, 4-3, in an elimination game later Saturday, 1 p.m. Sunday. A win in that game advances North Greenville to the NCAA Division II playoffs. If the Crusaders lose then, another game would follow to determine the tournament champion.

* South Atlantic Conference - Newberry (40-12) stayed in the winners bracket with a 10-6 win over Tusculum at Smokies Stadium in Kodak, Tenn. The Wolves took charge with a six-run third to advance to a noon Sunday game against Catawba, which beat Lincoln Memorial, 8-0, later Saturday. Colin Allman and Ian Clements had three hits apiece, Earlier, Anderson (20-31) was eliminated with an 8-2 loss to Wingate (32-17).

Elsewhere:
* David Dunlavey took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and finished with a two-hitter as Furman (18-25) evened its home series with Kansas (21-20) with a 3-0 victory. A redshirt junior out of Spartanburg High and USC Lancaster, Dunlavey walked one and struck out nine. Sterling Turman had an RBI single in the first and Furman scored another run in the second on a wild pitch. Bret Huebner followed Jordan Starkes' leadoff triple with a squeeze bunt single in the seventh.

* USC Upstate (19-22, 7-12) scored four runs in the fourth and eighth in the seventh in a 13-9 win at Longwood (10-32, 4-16) to clinch a Big South Conference series win. Garret Wallace singled, doubled and homered for the Spartans.

* Morgan Hyde's pinch-hit single in the 10th inning was the difference as Coastal Carolina (26-17-1, 11-8) won over Georgia State (12-32, 3-17), 5-4, to clinch a Sun Belt Conference series win.  Georgia State scored four runs in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead. Coastal tied the score in the eighth and went up 5-4 in the ninth, but the Panthers scored in the bottom of the inning to force extra innings. Zach Biermann and Jake Wright had three hits apiece and Parker Chavers doubled and homered for the Chants, who remained a half-game behind first-place Georgia Southern (26-18 12-8) in the East Division standings.

* Ashby Smith's third single of the game drove in two runs in the 12th inning of Game 2 as Presbyterian (21-23) salvaged the finale of a doubleheader at Pittsburgh (14-28) with a 9-7 victory. The Blue Hose dropped Game 1, 2-1. PC scored six runs in the sixth of Game 2 to go ahead 7-0, but Pitt scored seven runs in the eighth to force extra innings. Smith finished with four RBIs in Game 2. He had two singles in the opener.

* Clemson (26-18, 11-12) suffered a school-record ninth consecutive ACC loss when Georgia Tech (30-13, 15-8) rallied for a 13-8 victory at Russ Chandler Stadium.

The Tigers had leads of 1-0, 4-1, 6-5 and 8-6, only to have the Yellow Jackets rally each time. Perhaps most damaging was in the fifth, when the Tigers were unable to complete a potential inning-ending double play while protecting the 4-1 lead. Given extra life, Tech scored four runs to go up 5-4. Clemson went ahead 8-6 in the seventh, but the Yellow Jackets scored seven runs in the bottom of the inning.

Grayson Byrd had two homers and drove in three runs for Clemson. Jordan Greene had a double and two singles.

* South Carolina (24-19, 5-15) was no-hit until the ninth inning and suffered a late bullpen collapse in an 11-0 loss to Missouri (29-15-1, 9-10-1) as the Tigers clinched the SEC series win. Cam Tringali had an effective start for Carolina, leaving in the seventh inning with the score 1-0 and two runners on base. Missouri forced three more pitching changes in the inning and went on to score eight runs to take command. Missouri starter T.J. Sikkema and two relievers combined to strike out 15 Gamecocks. Luke Berryhill's one-out single in the ninth broke up the no-hitter.

* A ninth-run eighth inning put UNC Wilmington (23-22, 7-7) in command and the Seahawks clinched a Colonial Athletic Association series win over College of Charleston(27-16, 9-5) with a 14-4 victory at Patriots Point. UNCW already had a 5-2 lead before its late uprising. Harrison Hawkins had three hits for the College, which is 4 1/2 games behind first-place Elon (26-18, 15-2) in the CAA standings.

* Carson Jones hit two home runs, extending his school-record career total to 34, as Lander (18-31, 13-16) upended North Georgia (30-16, 17-9), 7-5, to even the Peach Belt Conference series at 1-1. The result moved Lander into a tie with Georgia Southwestern for eighth place, the final spot to qualify for the conference tournament. It also dealt a blow to North Georgia's chances of catching Flagler (28-20, 19-10) for the regular-season title after Flagler scored the game's final five runs in a 10-7 win at USC Aiken (26-20, 15-11. The Pacers fell a half-game behind third-place Young Harris. Conner Durden singled, homered and drove in five runs for Aiken.

* Winston-Salem State's (29-15) baseball team, informed earlier this year that the program was being scrapped, rolled to a 15-1 win over Claflin (23-13) in the HBCU Classic at Fluor Field in Greenville.
