Friday's S.C. college baseball roundup, May 10

Furman (23-27, 11-9) extended its winning streak to five games with a doubleheader sweep of Wofford (30-22, 11-8) to open their Southern Conference series at Russell C. King Field in Spartanburg Friday night.

John Michael Bertrand pitched the Paladins to a 7-3 win in the opener and Jordan Starkes' two-run single put Furman ahead to stay in a 9-3 win in Game 2.

Dax Roper singled, homered and drove in three runs in the opener. David Webel had three hits.

Bertrand allowed six hits and struck out five in eight innings in the opener.

In Game 2, Starkes' big hit turned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead. Jabari Richards led Furrman with three hits.

Logan Taplett had two hits in each game and Rob Hughes pitched both ninth innings.

Reed Massey had two hits in each game for the Terriers.

The Paladins pulled without a half-game of the Terriers and UNC Greensboro (11-8), who share third place in the SoCon standings.

Because of weather issues, the teams will take Saturday off and play the series finale at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Elsewhere:
* South Carolina (25-24, 6-19) ended a seven-game losing streak and gave its slim prospects of qualifying for the SEC Tournament a shot in the arm with a 5-4 win over Kentucky (24-25, 6-19) to open their conference series in Columbia.

The Gamecocks had dropped the opener of their first eight conference series this season.

Andrew Eyster doubled and hit a leadoff home run in the seventh to give the Gamecocks the lead. Dylan Harley had a solid relief outing to maintain the lead and Brett Kerry breeze through the ninth for the save.

Noah Campbell also homered and Brady Allen added a triple for the Gamecocks.

Carolina, Kentucky and Alabama (6-19) are tied for the final ticket to Hoover with five league game remaining. The Crimson Tide would win a tiebreaker with USC by winning the head-to-head series. The Kentucky-USC series winner would take that head-to-head tie. Alabama and Kentucky do not meet in the regular season.

Saturday's Kentucky-USC game has been moved to 11 a.m.

* Parker Chavers drew a bases-loaded walk in the ninth inning to tie the game and tripled in the winning run in the 11th as Coastal Carolina (28-20-1, 13-11) rallied from a 5-2 deficit for an 8-6 win at Texas Arlington (29-21, 15-10) to open their Sun Belt Conference series. Chavers was one of four players to get three hits for the Chanticleers, who had 18 as a team. The win, coupled with a rainout involving Georgia Southern (13-11). allowed Coastal to move into a tie for first place in the East Division.

* Griffin McClarty struck out 11 batters in seven innings and Danny Wondrack's home run put  the College of Charleston (30-19, 11-8) ahead to stay in a 4-2 win over Towson (13-35. 6-13) in the opener of their Colonial Athletic Association series at Patriots Point. The win, combined with James Madison's loss to Northeastern, put the Cougars two games ahead of the Dukes in the battle for second place.

* Jaret Bennett pitched a six-hit shutout and Ryan Stoudemire had a double and a homer among his four hits as Charleston Southern (18-31, 8-14) rolled past USC Upstate (22-24, 8-13), 9-0 to open their Big South Conference series. The teams will play a doubleheader at noon Saturday because of weather concerns.

* Clemson (29-21, 12-13) was shut out until Chad Fairey's ninth-inning homer as No. 17 N.C. State (38-13, 15-10) won the opener of their ACC series in Raleigh. Two Wolfpack pitchers held the Tigers to five hits. Clemson remained in a fourth-place tie with Wake Forest (12-13) in the Atlantic Divsion. Game 2 of the series has been moved to noon Saturday because of weather issues.

* Winthrop (28-19, 15-8) loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth in Game 2, but couldn't pull off the doubleheader sweep of first-base Campbell (29-17, 16-6) in Big South Conference play. The Eagles fell, 5-4, in the nightcap after winning the opener by the same score.  The result left the Eagles 1 1/2 games out of the first place, but Radford (16-7) moved into second place by virtue of a sweep of UNC Asheville (8-15).

* Jimmy Marcelli, Zacchaeus Rasberry and Jonathan White homered in Game 2 as Presbyterian (25-26, 13-10) got a doubleheader split at Longwood (11-37, 5-8) in Big South Conference play. The Blue Hose won the nightcap, 13-11, after losing the opener, 6-5, when the host Lancers scored a run in the bottom of the ninth. PC moved into a fourth-place tie with High Point (13-10), which lost a pair to Gardner-Webb.

* The Citadel (10-38, 3-16) lost its 18th straight game with a 4-0 decision against East Tennessee State (29-17, 8-10) at Joe Riley Park. The Bulldogs were held to three hits, including doubles by Ben Peden and Ches Goodman. Cadets starter Jordan Merritt struck out nine and allowed one earned run in a complete-game effort.

Tournaments
* NJCAA Eastern District - Spartanburg Methodist (31-17) fell into the losers bracket with a 10-5 loss to Potomac State in Bel Air, Md. Donald Hansis had two of the Pioneers' four homers. SMC plays top-seeded Harford in an elimination game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The host Owls were run-ruled by Monroe, 14-2

* NCCAA South Regional - Erskine took a  big early lead, but Warner rallied to within 7-6 before rain suspended the sixth game of the National Christian College Athletic Association's South Regional in the bottom of the third inning. The game is scheduled to resume at 9 a.m. Saturday at Brewton-Parker College in Mount Vernon, Ga.  Plans are to complete the event on Saturday. OIf so, that would entail up to three games after the Erskine-Warner game is finished.

* Peach Belt Conference - Flagler (30-21) scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth for a 3-2 win over Francis Marion (27-20) in the first day of pool play at St. Augustine, Fla. Fred Wadsworth doubled in a run and later scored in the Patriots' two-run fifth inning. Patriots starter Josh Bobrowski struck out eight in seven innings. USC Aiken (30-21) scored two runs in the seventh and held on for a 3-1 win over Columbus State (30-19).  After right-fielder Sean McQuillan's over-the-fence catch robbed Columbus State's Garrett Kirkwood of a two-run homer in the top of the seventh, Chandler Rogers provided the margin of victory with a two-run single in the bottom of the inning. Top-seeded North Georgia lost to eighth-seeded Georgia Southwestern, 4-2, and Georgia College beat Young Harris, 10-6.
