Note: This report originally said Newberry was in the playoffs for the first time since 1977. USC Sumter coach and former Newberry coach Tim Medlin reports the school also participated in the playoffs in 1989 and 1992. I'd written 1977 because that's what the announcers on Newberry's video stream said on Friday. My apologies,

Ches Goodman's eighth-inning double broke a tie and The Citadel (11-42, 4-19) added three more runs en route to a 5-2 win over Southern Conference rival Western Carolina (20-29, 8-15) in Cullowhee Friday to snap a 22-game losing streak dating back to April 5.
The Bulldogs' Jordan Flanders scattered three hits over six innings, but left with a no-decision and a 1-1 tie.
Ben Peden led off the eighth with a double and Goodman followed with the go-ahead hit. Will Bastain added an RBI double later in the inning.
Peden finished with three hits and Cameron Reeves got his first win of the season by pitching the final three innings as the Bulldogs got their first win away from Joe Riley Park this season.
The result evened the series at 1-1 and also assured that the Bulldogs and Catamounts will meet in the 8/9 play-in game at the Southern Conference Tournament next week.
Elsewhere:
* Jacob Hennessy allowed two runs over 7 1/3 innings and Michael Green had four hits as Clemson (33-22, 15-14) clinched fourth place in the ACC Atlantic Division and a series win over Wake Forest (29-25, 13-16) with a 10-9 victory.
The Tigers took a 10-4 lead into the ninth before Wake Forest scored five runs.
Grayson Byrd hit his 14th homer and joined three teammates in getting two hits each to augment Green, who singled twice, doubled twice and drove in three runs.
* Griffin McLarty pitched six no-hit innings and Logan McRae hit a three-run homer as College of Charleston (35-19, 15-8) clinched a Colonial Athletic Association win over Delaware (21-32, 9-14) with a 5-0 victory. It was the College's seventh straight win. McLarty struck out eight. Jordan Hutchins led off the seventh with a single against Cougars reliever Brooks Lucas to break up the no-hitter. Dupree Hart and Joey Mundy had three hits each for the College. One of Mundy's was a home run.
* Wofford (32-23, 13-9) scored 10 runs in the third inning for the bulk of its offense in an 18-10 win at UNC Greensboro (33-17, 14-9) to even their Southern Conference series at 1-1. Reed Massey drove in five runs and was one of four Terriers with three hits apiece. Wofford is in fourth place in the SoCon, a half-game behind UNCG and Mercer. A Terriers win and a Mercer loss at Furman on Saturday would give Wofford the second seed for the SoCon Tournament.
* Furman (24-29, 12-11) scored the tying run in the ninth when the Mercer's catcher couldn't hold the ball on a potential game-ending out at home and Jordan Starkes delivered an RBI single in the 10th to give the Paladins an 8-7 victory over the Bears (29-25, 14-9). Paladins starter David Dunlavey was solid over five innings, but couldn't return after a lengthy lightning delay -- while the sun shined the whole time. Mercer committed six errors. Furman can wrap up fifth place in the SoCon with a win in the series' rubber game.
* Jackson Dean pitched a complete game and Presbyterian (28-27, 15-11) moved within one win of clinching fourth place in the Big South Conference with 6-4 win over Charleston Southern (21-33, 11-15) to even their series. Zacchaeus Rasberry homered to lead off the fourth inning, when PC scored four times to overcome a 3-0 deficit. Jimmy Marcelli had three hits for the Blue Hose.
* Winthrop (30-21, 17-9) scored four runs in the eighth inning and held on for a 6-5 win at USC Upstate (23-28, 9-15) to even their Big South Conference series. Jake Sullivan singled in the go-ahead run for the Eagles, who will finish third. Upstate remains is in eighth place.
* South Carolina (27-27, 7-22) trotted out another anemic offensive effort, scoring its only runs on a pair of third-inning wild pitches in an 11-2 loss to Mississippi State (45-10, 20-9). Reid Morgan took a shutout into the fourth inning before the Bulldogs tied the game. He allowed a leadoff homer in the seventh to fall behind 3-2, then saw his defense commit three errors over the next two at-bats to set up a four-run outburst. State added five runs in the eighth. Luke Berryhill had two of South Carolina's five hits. The Gamecocks' only paths to avoid missing the SEC Tournament for the second time path since joining the league in 1992 is to beat Mississippi State and have Alabama lose to Georgia on Saturday ... or get rained out while Alabama and Kentucky both lose (to Vanderbilt).
* Joel McDaniel's grand slam capped a five-run first inning and Appalachian State (22-29, 13-15) evened its Sun Belt Conference series with Coastal Carolina (29-23-1, 14-13) with an 18-6 victory. The Chanticleers pulled within 6-5 in the third inning, but the Mountaineers scored two runs in the fourth and five in the fifth to win going away. Coastal maintained a slim edge over Troy for third place in the East Division, but was mathematically eliminated from the race for first place. Zach Biermann had three hits and drove in two runs for the Chanticleers.
NCAA Division II Southeast Regional
* Tigerville bracket - Utah Jones' eighth-inning bunt drove in the go-ahead run and North Greenville held on for a 4-3 win over Mount Olive to eliminate the Trojans (31-19). Later in the day, Tucker Burgess struck out 10 in six innings of a 7-0 win over Lincoln Memorial (34-18). The Crusaders (44-9), winners of 13 straight games, can reach the regional championship series with a win on Saturday. LMU must beat the Crusaders twice to advance.
* Newberry bracket - Newberry's first trip to the baseball postseason since the 1992 NAIA playoffs ended with a pair of losses. Young Harris (36-20) scored two runs in the first inning of the opener and was never headed in a 5-1 victory. Later, South Atlantic Conference rival Catawba (44-12) eliminated the Wolves (41-16) with a 7-0 shutout. Newberry swept the three-game regular-season series with Catawba, but lost the the Indians twice in the SAC Tournament and again on Friday.
