NCCAA regional involving Erskine preps for four ... or five ... teams

The South Regional of  the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association's playoffs begins on Thursday, even though the final lineup for the field won't be known until after Game 2 is in progress.

What's known is the event will be played at Brewton-Parker College in Mount Vernon, Ga. Joining the host Barons for sure will be Erskine, Toccoa Falls and Trinity Baptist colleges.

But there's a chance that Warner University could be in the field. That Florida school is hopeful of receiving an at-large bid to the NAIA playoffs when bids are announced at 5 p.m. Thursday. By then, Erskine will have played Trinity Baptist (noon) and Brewton-Parker will be on the field against Toccoa Falls (3:30 p.m.).

If Warner is awarded an NAIA bid, the NCCAA South Regional will remain a four-team event. If Warner does not go to the NAIAs, the South Regional bracket/schedule will be adjusted for a five-team event. Warner would play its first game at 9 a.m. Friday.

The South Regional winner joins other regional winners for the NCCAA World Series at the J.B. "Red" Owens Complex in Easley May 22-25. This is the second straight year the tournament will held in Easley after being in Mason, Ohio before that. Campbellsville, coached by Woodruff native Beauford Sanders, won the title in 2018.

World Series teams participate in a Christian service project in the area during the week of the tournament.

The NCCAA's  headquarters are in Greenville.
