(went 2-1 at UNC Greensboro)
Wofford entered the weekend with a 1 1/2-game edge over Furman for fourth place in the Southern Conference standings and needing some help from the Paladins to get past UNC Greensboro and Mercer.
The hill got steeper for coach Todd Interdonato's Terriers Thursday when they lost the opener of their series at UNC Greensboro, 1-0, while being held to one hit. It was Wofford's first shutout of the season.
The Terriers responded in style, getting 19 hits each day in winning the final two games, 18-10 and 14-5, to move past the Spartans in the standings. As a bonus, Furman won its series over Mercer to help Wofford finish alone in in second place. It's the Terriers' best-ever finish since they joined the SoCon.
Wofford meets VMI on Wednesday in the first round of the SoCon Tournament.
