Pioneers win Region, play Potomac State in Eastern District opener at 2 p.m. Friday

Spartanburg Methodist College won the NJCAA Region 10 Tournament Tuesday, beating defending champ USC Sumter, 15-3, in the championship game at Lexington County Baseball Stadium.

The Pioneers (31-16) fell behind 2-0 before rallying to take the lead and pull away.  Sumter (30-22) needed to beat SMC twice to win the region title.

Donald Hansis, Nick Hoffman and John Miller homered for the Pioneers who had eight extra-base hits and 11 singles.

Monday's win was No. 1,199 and the 12th Region 10 championship of coach Tim Wallace's 28-year career at SMC.

The Pioneers advance to the Eastern District Tournament beginning Friday at Bel Air, Md. Harford Community College, which won the Region 20 Tournament, is the host team for the four-team double-elimination event.

The Pioneers play Region 20 runner-up Potomac State at 2 p.m. Friday. Harford faces Region 15 champ Monroe CC at 6 p.m. in Friday's other first-round game. The tournament continues through Sunday.

The district champion advances to the NJCAA World Series in Grand Junction, Colo., later this month. Monroe won the Eastern District last season.
