Saturday's S.C. college baseball roundup, May 4

Charleston Southern (17-29, 7-13) got four RBIs from Ryan Stoudemire and R.J. Petit pitched 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief as the Buccaneers upended Big South Conference leader Campbell (26-16, 14-5), 9-3, Saturday to even their series at 1-1.

Petit came in in the fifth inning with CSU holding a 4-2 lead. He allowed a sacrifice fly to the first batter he faced, then shut the Camels out the rest of the way.

Stoudemire had a two-run double in the fifth and a two-run single in the sixth.

Reid Hardwick, Josh Litchfield and Jason Miller had three hits apiece for Charleston Southern, which goes for a series win on Sunday.

Elsewhere
* Furman (19-27, 8-9) fell behind 3-0 before roaring back for an 11-4 win over VMI (14-34, 8-12) to even their Southern Conference series at 1-1. Dax Roper had three hits and drove in three runs for the Paladins.  Banks Griffth, Jared Mihalik and Jabari Richards added two hits apiece in support of Paladins starter David Dunlavey.

* A seven-run fifth inning put Clemson (28-18) in control and the Tigers coasted to 10-2 win over Gardner-Webb (19-23) at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Logan Davidson doubled and homered twice in the nonconference victory, Kyle Wilkie also homered for Clemson, while Davis Sharpe pitched into the sixth inning to get the win. The teams play again Sunday at Keeter Stadium in Shelby, N.C.

* Hayes Heinecke struck out 10 batters in eighth inning and Wofford (28-20, 10-6) coasted past The Citadel (10-35, 3-14) for the second straight day, 8-1, to clinch a Southern Conference series win. It was the 15th straight loss for the Bulldogs. Mike Brown and John Dempsey had three hits apiece for Wofford, which maintained third place by a half-game over UNC Greensboro (10-7 SoCon).

* Winthrop (27-17, 14-7)  and Presbyterian (22-25, 12-9) split their Big South Conference doubleheader. The Eagles won the opener, 6-4, to assure a series victory, before PC got a complete game from Jackson Dean in the second game, 4-1, to snap Winthrop's five-game winning streak,

* Louisiana (22-27, 10-13) clinched a Sun Belt Conference series win with a 9-7 win at Coastal Carolina (26-20-1, 11-11). The  Ragin' Cajuns  took a 3-0 lead in the third, but Coastal responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Louisiana scored two in the fifth, but the Chanticleers tied the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the frame. The Cajuns took the lead for good with two runs in the sixth. Coastal fell into a second-place tie with Appalachian State and Troy in the East Division. First-place Georgia Southern (12-10 Sun Belt) was trailing Troy, 4-2, when Saturday's game was suspended because of weather.

* Joey Mundy's pinch-hit homer in the ninth forced extra innings, but College of Charleston (28-18, 10-7) lost to William & Mary for the second day, 4-3 in 13 innings, to drop the Colonial Athletic Association series. The Cougars were down to their last out in the ninth when  pinch-hitter Luke Stageberg struck out, but reached on a wild pitch. Mundy followed with a shot over the right-field wall to tie the score at 3-3. Elon  (18-3 CAA) clinched the the regular-season championship. College of Charleston has a 2 1/2-game lead over five teams in the race for second place.

Tournaments
* Region 10 - Jordan Jackson struck out 10 in a four-hit complete game as Spartanburg Methodist (30-16) won over USC Sumter (28-21), 5-0, to remain in the winners bracket of the rain-plagued event in Lexington. Florence-Darlington Tech (42-11) beat Lousburg, 6-2, in the only other game completed. The completion of the suspended USC Union-USC Salkehatchie game is scheduled to be followed by four more games on Sunday as the event tries to catch up.

* Independent Schools - Winston-Salem State (34-16) picked up its third last-at-bat win of the weekend, topping Clafin (24-18), 5-4, to reach the title game of the five-team event in Marion, N.C. Claflin plays at 3 p.m. Sunday against a team to be determined later Saturday.

Weather
* South Carolina's game with Vanderbilt was postponed until part of an 11 a.m. Sunday doubleheader, while North Greenville and USC Upstate their scheduled action canceled.
