USC Upstate ( 4-0 for the week)
(beat Furman, Monmouth, Manhattan and Brown)
Whatever first-year coach Mike McGuire is selling, his USC Upstate players are buying.
The Spartans followed up a midweek beatdown of Furman with three wins in the USC Upstate/Wofford Invitational over the weekend to improve to 6-1.
It's the best start for Upstate since the 2012 club went 12-1 to open the season. The Pioneers hit .316 for the week, while their pitchers complied a 0.77 earned-run average and a .190 opponents' batting average. Upstate pitchers struck out 37 in 35 innings.
McGuire, a former University of South Carolina player, came to Spartanburg in the offseason after building a 228-187 record in a seven-year stint at Morehead State.
Next up for the Spartans is a Tuesday home game against neighboring Wofford, which has started 7-1. First pitch is at 4 p.m. at Harley Park. Wofford has matched its best start since 2016.
