News digest, Feb. 22

It's DII Day

I see where it's National Division II Day. Congratulations to all state DII schools. Many of those schools' fans are among my most involved followers.

Thanks for appreciating what I try to do to provide recognition to your school's baseball program.

No. 1 is in the state

Speaking of DII, Tampa, the No. 1 team in most of the major NCAA Division II national rankings, is at USC Aiken for a Friday-Saturday-Sunday series at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.

The Palmetto State's North Greenville is second to Tampa in most of the rankings, and the Crusaders have a home series against King Friday and Saturday.

Games adjusted

Ol' Jupiter Pluvius  (look him up) is impacting this weekend's college baseball schedule.

* Emory & Henry's home series with South Atlantic Conference rival Limestone has been moved to Gaffney.

* Anderson's SAC series at Coker is now Saturday-Sunday instead of Friday-Saturday.

* Southern Wesleyan's series at Chowan is now Saturday-Sunday.

* Florence-Darlington Tech's second weekend of the Stinger Invitational will now begin on Saturday instead of Friday.

I'll update the weekend (and daily) schedules as I learn more

Tournaments continue

In addition to the above-mentioned Stinger Invitational in Florence, several other multiteam events are on the docket. They are round-robin schedules as opposed to a bracketed event with a championship game.

* A second straight weekend of round-robin play is set for Springs Brooks Stadium in Conway, with Ball State, Cincinnati and Illinois joining host Coastal Carolina. Ball State moved up the coast after a 3-1 record showing in the Swig & Swine Classic in Mount Pleasant last weekend. Former Greenville Braves infielder (1990-91) Rich Maloney, is in his second stint as coach at Ball State after a decade between tenures at Michigan. He has won 956 games and taken six teams to the NCAA Tournament. Current Clemson coach Erik Bakich was Maloney's successor with the Wolverines. Former South Carolina player Vytas Valincius is on the Fighting Illini roster.

* The One Spartanburg Classic features Canisius, Quinnipiac and St. Joseph's coming in to rotate games at USC Upstate, Presbyterian and Gardner-Webb.

* The annual round-robin between Spartanburg Methodist, USC Salkehatchie and East Georgia is on tap for Mooneyham Field on the SMC campus. East Georgia (16-2) is ranked as No. 5 nationally among junior college and also has wins over Florence-Darlington Tech, USC Salkehatchie, USC Sumter and the Columbia International and Erskine JV teams.

* Lander is scheduled to get in three games at Wingate over the weekend, including a noon Sunday game with Findlay sandwiched two games with the host Bulldogs.
