Palmetto State Baseball team of the week, Feb. 19-25: USC Sumter

USC Sumter (5-0 for the week)
(beat Catawba Valley; went 4-0 against Potomac State)

There were lots of good weeks by state teams. Seven were unbeaten over the past seven days and six more won at least three out of four games.

I opted to go with the Fire Ants, who have won six straight games and nine of their last 10 to move over .500 (10-8) for the first since losing their first six (and seven of their first eight).

A major reason for the surge has been better offensive output. Sumter was shut out three times and scored just 10 runs in the opening skid. Over the last 10 games coach Tim Medlin's squad has scored 10 or more runs four times and has been held under five just three times.

Up next: Lackawanna, Saturday in Florence as part of weekend 3 of the Stinger Invitational.
