After winning their first two games of the season, the Fire Ants struggled for a couple of weeks, losing nine of their next 11.

Times have changed.

Sumter's Region 10 sweep of USC Union over the weekend stretched its winning streak to nine games and put the Fire Ants three games over .500 (19-16) for the first time this season.

Coach Tim Medlin's squad has evened its region mark at 9-9, putting them just two games behind second-place Gaston College and one game back of third-place USC Lancaster.

Offense has been a big factor in the success. The Fire Ants have scored 10 on more runs seven times in the last eight games. That matches their 10-run outputs over the first 27 games of the season.

Cavan McMeans (.367) reached base via a hit or walk in the first 33 games of the season before being kept off base in game 1 of Saturday's double. Hudson Moss (.357) is 19-for-26 in his the eight games with 2 doubles, a triple, three homers (one in each game against Union) 15 runs scored and 16 RBI. He also scored twice and drove in a run in the first game of the winning streak.

Up next: DH vs. Francis Marion JV on Tuesday, followed a weekend series at Gaston College.
