Jim Toman has been involved in baseball for most of his adult life. (CofC photo) |
I was just about to order supper at a restaurant supper Monday when I got a call from Josh at SportstalkSC say that they wanted me to move my weekly segment on college baseball in South Carolina from Fridays to Mondays.
Phil Kornblut mentioned I was replacing Jim Toman, who was having some health issues. I made an on-air joke about being a poor replacement for his coaching - and post-ejection tirade - skills, and didn't think much more about it.
A day or so later, I got a call from Tim Medlin at USC Sumter. I asked him how former Spartanburg Methodist coach Tim Wallace was doing in his fight against cancer, and Medlin told me Toman is going through something similar.
Toman was a teammate of Ray Tanner's at N.C. State and later served as his assistant coach with both the Wolfpack and South Carolina (1997-2007). He later won 406 games as head coach at Liberty and Middle Tennessee and also served as assistant head coach at College of Charleston in 2018.
Former USC student assistant Fox Beyer has created a GoFundMe page to help the Toman family with medical expenses.
