News Digest, May 31

Aldrich, Miller, Roth semifinalists
College of Charleston's Daniel Aldrich, Clemson's Brad Miller and South Carolina's Michael Roth are among the 30 semifinalists named for the Golden Spikes Award. The three finalists will be announced Monday, with the winner to be named July 15. There is a voting component at the Web site, but I don't know what, if any, role it plays in the selection.

  • Carter has glioblastoma
Former Major League and current Palm Beach Atlantic University coach Gary Carter has been diagnosed with glioblastoma, a cancer that affects the brain and central nervous system. It killed my mom in just a few months in 2001. Here's hoping there's been enough progress for a better prognosis for Carter.

  • NCAA on TV
The Fullerton and Gainesville regionals are scheduled to be televised on ESPNU. The Charlottesville regional is to have live video streaming at NCAA.com. It looks like the Atlanta regional will be on CSS. I'm unaware of any other video available for regionals, including Columbia and Clemson.
