Chal Port dies
Chal Port, who won 641 games as baseball coach at The Citadel, died Saturday morning at age 80.
Meyer joins USC staff
Former USC player and ex-major leaguer Drew Meyer has joined the Gamecocks staff as a student assistant coach. He replaces Brian Buscher, who graduated and is now coaching on the high school level in the Columbia area.

Just confirming what you already know but I was slow in posting, South Carolina lost outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. and recruits Brian Goodwin and Taylor Guerreri to the major league draft in the closing hours before the signing deadline. Clemson lost shortstop Brad Miller and pitching recruit Daniel Norris.
Also, ex-Gamecocks James Darnell was called up the majors by the Padres.

Russell C. King Jr., a former Wofford standout and person for whom the Terriers' baseball field is named, died Aug. 14 in Columbia.
Heesch honored
USC's Beaufort's Michael Heesch was named Coastal Plain League defensive player of the year. He was a pitcher for the Gastonia Grizzlies.
USC gets outfield commitment
John Whittle of TheBigSpur.com, who provides excellent coverage of USC baseball recruiting, reports the the Gamecocks have received a commitment from outfielder Jamie Jarmon of Millsboro, Del., for its 2012 recruiting class.
Vols set schedule
Tennessee has set its 2012 baseball schedule, which includes a three-game visit to South Carolina April 6-8.
