Joyce honored
Former Spartanburg Methodist coach and longtime pro scout Lon Joyce has been selected for induction into the National Junior College Athletic Association Hall of Fame. It's a richly deserved honor.

Greenville Rangers (from left) Buddy Caldwell (ex-USC), Ted Savia and Charlie Bordes pretend to be going down for the third time in a flooded dugout at Greenville's Meadowbrook Park in 1972 The facility was next to the Reedy River, so I'm sure there were plenty of pollutants in that water. Meadowbrook Park revisited
Forty years ago Tuesday, Meadowbrook Park in Greenville burned down, but the Greenville Rangers of the Western Carolinas League played the season there anyway.  I wrote a story in Sunday's Greenville News talking to some of the people involved in a memorable season. Please read it if you got a chance. I think it may be the best thing I've written in my 39+ years as a sportswriter.

I also wrote a story for online only with more memories.

There's also a link to film shot by then-Spartanburg Phillies announcer Warner Fusselle, who turned it in a feature on ESPN in 1988.

If you can't access the stories online through our newspaper's paywall, try going to a library or news stand which might have The Greenville News Sunday edition.

Let me know what you think.
