Winthrop will host a free baseball clinic for area youngsters Feb. 2 at the Winthrop Ballpark in Rock Hill.

John Infante of AthleticScholarships.net reports college baseball, hockey and soccer players might have the option of using an agent's services under a proposal scheduled to be discussed at the NCAA Convention.

Tomasovich returns to Asheboro
Charleston Southern shortstop Alex Tomasovich has committed to play for the Asheboro Copperheads of the Coastal Plain League in the summer of 2013, the summer wood bat league team has announced. Tomasovich also played at Asheboro in 2012.

Thompson leaves Florida program
Outfielder Tyler Thompson has decided to forgo his redshirt senior season for Florida in 2013. Thompson, who twice suffered ligament injuries during his career, had a .280 career batting average in 154 games.

Charleston precincts check in
I've had two more responses to my preseason preview questionnaire and at least one more promise of a response by next week. The Charleston Southern preview is scheduled for Friday and the College of Charleston preview for Saturday. That puts the response rate above 50 percent, for which I am grateful.
