News Digest, Jan. 3, Part 3

(Sorry for the multi-post digest; I wanted to get the news about the top coaches list out as soon as possible.)

Augenstein selected for scholarship
Senior pitcher Ben Augenstein has been selected as the 2013 recipient of the Thomas L. Smith scholarship at USC Upstate. The school Website reports the Thomas L. Smith Scholarship is awarded annually to a present or former USC Upstate baseball player, currently enrolled at the University, who has made significant contributions to the program. The memorial scholarship has been created to honor Mr. Smith, provide opportunity for others, and serve as a reminder as to the real reasons we play baseball.

Upstate Diamond Classic announcement likely soon
I expect for the featured speaker for the annual Upstate Diamond Classic to benefit Furman's baseball program to be announced soon. The event usually occurs in mid-February. Winthrop has already announced Chipper Jones as the featured speaker for its similar event Feb. 10 in Rock Hill. Sumter native, former New York Yankee and ex-USC coach Bobby Richardson spoke at an event for North Greenville a few weeks ago.
