NEWS DIGEST, SEPT. 20

Florida 1st, USC 11th, Clemson 32nd in recruiting rankings
Florida is ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball's annual rankings of recruiting classes. South Carolina is No. 11 and Clemson is No. 32. There are 10 SEC teams and 8 ACC teams in the top 40. Among those also note for top classes were Coastal Carolina, Winthrop, the other four SEC schools, three ACC schools (including Notre Dame) and Appalachian State, Georgia Southern and Samford of the Southern Conference.

Wolves add coaches
Newberry has added David Anderson and Brett Harker to its coaching staff. Anderson played at Coastal Carolina and Harker played at College of Charleston.

Bowman signs with Diamondbacks
Former Coastal Carolina star Daniel Bowman has signed a free-agent contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. Bowman has been playing with the Lake Erie Crushers of the independent Frontier League. He hit .309 with 11 homers, 25 doubles and 8 triples in 2013.

Scrimmages
Here are weekend baseball scrimmages/practices I'm aware of:
* Clemson: 2:30 p.m. Saturday on field behind the batting cages; 12:30 p.m. Sunday, with 2 p.m. scrimmge, at Fluor Field, Greenville.
* South Carolina: 11:15 a.m. Saturday; 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Carolina Stadium, Columbia.

* Brian Foley of CollegeBaseballDaily.com writes about six coaches who could be on the hot seat in 2014. They include  Mike Gambino of Boston College, Augie Garrido of Texas(!), Jim Morris of Miami and Tim Jamieson of Missouri.
