2014 PREVIEW: VOORHEES

Voorhees coach Robert Platts
We're barely two weeks away from the start of college baseball season for S.C. college & junior college teams below the NCAA Division I level. I've sent questionnaires to state coaches and will publish more as I receive them.

PalmettoStateBaseball.com: After what you saw in fall workouts, what are your team's prospects for the 2014 season?

Voorhees coach Robert Platts: We look to take the next step in rebuilding the program at Voorhees. We have a bunch of freshmen and sophomores.

PSB: What are your biggest areas of concern entering the 2014 season?

RP: We do not have the depth needed for this season, especially in the pitching department. There are only 7 pitchers on the roster this year. Also. we do not have any seniors.

PSB: In what areas does your team appear to be improved from the 2013 season?

RP: I believe we have improved greatly defensively and offensively. We finally have a shortstop, which will help us greatly and where we struggled at so much last season. We spent a lot of time on the little things this fall. Best team chemistry we have had in the 3 years I have been here I believe these guys will continue to get better.

PSB: Based on fall workouts, which returnees from 2013 (including redshirts) look best prepared to play a bigger role in 2014?

RP: Sophomore leadoff hitter Shawn Carrion hit 330 last season and we look to build around him for years to come. Sophomore Brandon Gaither has improved a lot on the mound and will be a weekend starter. Sophomore Josh Rogers (C/P) will also be a weekend starter and continues to throw well. Most improved on the mound from the fall is LHP/1B Marvin Mouzon. We think he has gained a lot of confidence and is a lot more consistent. SS Travis Seabrook will be a key piece in the defense but we expect great things from him at the plate hitting in that leadoff or 2 hole for us.

PSB: Based on fall workouts, which newcomers are most likely to contend for major roles in 2014?

RP: RHP/3B Jeremy Harmon topped out at 89 on pro day and will be a big bat in the middle of the lineup. C Greg Tyson will get alot of time behind the plate and has done a great job of taking control of the staff. LHP/OF Jarius Whiten will be starting in the OF and will also help on the mound.

Next: Whichever school responds next
