2014 TEAM PREVIEW: ERSKINE

This information was submitted by Thomas Holland, Erskine's assistant sports information director.

Palmetto State Baseball: After what you saw in fall workouts, what are your team's prospects for the 2014 season?
Thomas Holland: We should be much improved from last season, as we will have a lot of experience on offense.  We have a chance to be explosive on offense.  Our pitching staff looked to be solid, especially in the bull pen.  We had to replace two conference starters from last year, and we believe we have.

PSB: What are your biggest areas of concern entering the 2014 season?
TH: Losing four pitchers who logged 223 innings last year, we will have an almost a completely new starting rotation.  Austin Gambrell came on strong for us last year and will counted on to be a fixture on the weekend as well as Zach McAllister.  Joe Johnson and Chase Norman will be counted on to anchor down our bullpen.

PSB: In what areas does your team appear to be improved from the 2013 season?

TH: Our offense looks to be improved from last season, as we return nine players who saw a significant amount of playing time. First team all conference outfielder Chase Corn (.358 8 HR,s) will anchor down the line up as well as Logan Galliher (.328 4 HR's 13 2B's).  We also feel that we have improved our defense with the addition of Brandon Overstreet and Andrew Kozak.

PSB: Based on fall workouts, which returnees from 2013 (including redshirts) look best prepared to play a bigger role in 2014?
TH: Juniors Brandon Wooten and Richard Dix both had great falls and look to improve on their 2013 numbers.  Senior Teddy Heiser also had a great fall and will push for a starting job.  On the mound, Zach McAllister and Alex Rhodes both had outstanding falls and will find themselves in the starting rotation.

PSB: Based on fall workouts, which newcomers are most likely to contend for major roles in 2014?

TH: Brandon Overstreet, who transferred in from Herkimer Community College, came in and showed out and will start the season at shortstop.  Andrew Kozak transferred in from Hudson Valley Community College and should the first prototypical lead off hitter the Fleet have had in several years.  Zach Smith will anchor first base and hit in the middle of the line up.  USC-Sumter transfers JR Black and Wes Schuler had strong falls for the Fleet and will look to log a lot of innings on the mound.
