SEASON GETTING CLOSER

The march toward baseball season continues. Today is the first day NCAA Division I programs can have team workouts in preparation for Feb. 14 season-openers.

South Carolina is having a media session today and Clemson has one on Saturday.

The Gamecocks have scrimmages Saturday (1 p.m.) and Sunday (1:30 p.m.) at Carolina Stadium. Clemson 's first practice is set for 1 p.m. Saturday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Both USC and Clemson had work done on at their facilities during the offseason. USC addressed some structural issues in the third base/left-field area of the stands. Clemson moved the infield closer to the outfield fences.

The Citadel will have its first team workout today, although I haven't seen a time listed.

Teams on levels other than NCAA Division I can begin their season earlier. There are three games set for NEXT Friday, Jan. 31.

Southern Wesleyan is at home against Bluefield (Va.), USC Sumter entertains Brunswick CC and USC Salkehatchie hosts East Georgia.
