Columbia: Gamecocks bounced from regional

Virginia scored single runs in the first three innings and held on for a 3-2 win over South Carolina in an elimination game of the NCAA Columbia Regional.

Matt Wyatt, making his fourth career start and first in more than two months, baffled the Gamecocks through five innings.

Carolina got a run in the sixth and Brennan Milone homered in the seventh. USC got the potential tying run to third in the eighth, but Cavaliers closer Stephen Schoch got out of the inning quash the Gamecocks' last real threat.

Julian Bosnic and Daniel Lloyd were effective in in relief for the Gamecocks (34-23), combining for  5 1/3 shutout innings on two hits. 

Carolina hit .176 (16-for-91) in the regional, striking out 35 times in 26 innings. Gamecocks pitchers had held opponents to a .200 batting average and a 2.77 ERA with 25 strikeouts in 26 innings.
