The NCAA transfer portal paid early dividends for state NCAA Division I schools on Opening Day.
* Clemson had several bright spots in addition to the pitching of Mack Anglin and the relievers. The Tigers played errorless ball and worked eight walks against Indiana. Dayton transfer Benjamin Blackwell contributed a home run.
* College of Charleston got the 1,000th win in program history since joining NCAA Division I. Former Florence-Darlington Tech stars J.T. Marr and Luke Wood, traditional junior college transfers, combined for five of the Cougars' 20 hits.
* Jake Gitter, a transfer from Northern Colorado, homered for Coastal Carolina. Did you know Northern Colorado went to the College World Series 10 times between 1952 and 1974, compiling a 3-20 record?
* Vanderbilt transfer Matt Hogan tripled, homered, walked, scored twice, stole two bases and drove in two runs for South Carolina. Missouri transfer Brandt Belk singled, walked twice and scored a run, while Appalachian State Noah Hall pitched two shutout innings. Freshman Michael Braswell homered and had a couple of nice plays at shortstop. Some shaky bullpen work late almost cost the Gamecocks.
* Former Gamecock Noah Myers had two hits and a steal and scored twice for USC Upstate.
* Francis Marion made a success debut in Conference Carolinas, getting a walk-off win over conference power Belmont Abbey.
* There were several big innings, both for and against state teams. Coastal Carolina took control wioth an eight-run third, while a seven-run eighth propelled The Citadel to victory. USC Sumter scored 11 times in the first inning against CCBC-Dundalk. CCBC stands for Community College of Baltimore County. A nine-run fifth by George Mason proved to be too much for Wofford to overcome. UNC Pembroke had a 13-run eighth against Southern Wesleyan
* USC Aiken lost to NCAA Division II No. 2 Tampa, USC Beaufort dropped a pair to NAIA No. 3 Southeastern and Charleston Southern fell to NCAA Division I No. 5 Mississippi.
