Palmetto State Baseball team of the week, March 21-27: Wofford

Wofford (4-0 for the week)
(beat USC Upstate; went 3-0 vs. Gardner-Webb)

The Terriers have won five straight games and 11 of their last 12. Their 17 wins are the most of any NCAA Division I team in the state.

Coach Todd Interdonato's squad has the speed to put pressure on opponents and pounce on opportunities caused by mistakes.

Take the latest win, a 7-2 decision over Gardner-Webb on Sunday, for example. GW scored two runs in the the first inning and led until Nolen Hester's homer tied the score in the sixth.

After John Dempsey's leadoff walk in the seventh, Jack Renwick hit a routine fly ball that was muffed by the Bulldogs' left fielder. Ryan Galanie had an infield single to the mound and the GW pitcher threw the ball away as the go-ahead run to score. Wofford went on to score four more runs, all unearned.

Wofford opponents have allowed 35 unearned runs this season. The Terriers are daring on the basepaths even without help, averaging more than 3.5 stolen bases per game.

Up next for the Terriers:  A Wednesday home game against Winthrop.
