State schedule, March 4-6

The Clemson-South Carolina series, one of the top annual regular-season events in college baseball, is on tap this weekend.

The teams play at USC's Founders Park Friday, move across downtown Columbia to Segra Park near Bull Street on Saturday, and finish at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson on Sunday.

Clemson is 8-0, while South Carolina is 7-1. The Gamecocks' starting rotation is in disarray. Projected Friday starter Julian Bosnic hasn't pitched yet while recovering from a flexor issue. That has moved Will Sanders up one notch. James Hicks was the Saturday starter the first two weekends, but left his second start with an injury. The school announced on Thursday that Hicks will have Tommy John surgery and miss the remainder of the season.

Josiah Sightler was the Game 3 starter the first weekend, but missed his second start and Cade Austin started in his place, doing well. Sightler, also a first baseman, has returned to the lineup.

After Sanders on Friday, USC hasn't announced its starting pitchers for the final two games. Whoever the starters are, they will face a Tigers' lineup putting up big numbers so far. Clemson has six regulars batting .300 or better and is hitting .329 as a team. Mack Anglin leads an able pitching staff and will get the start for the Tigers Friday.

In addition to the Clemson-South Carolina series, there are other interesting matchups:

* Coastal Carolina visits North Carolina.
* Wofford plays host to a Pennsylvania team coming off a series win at Texas A&M.
* Charleston Southern is at home against a Samford team which won a game at Florida State last weekend.
* Northern Kentucky, which won a game at Mississippi State last weekend, is at The Citadel.
* Anderson is at defending NCAA Division II champ and current No. 1 (writers' poll) Wingate to open South Atlantic Conference play.
* Lander risks its five-game winning streak with a visit from No. 25 North Georgia in Peach Belt Conference play.
* Coker, tied for first in the SAC after one weekend, is at No. 15 Lenoir-Rhyne.
* Newberry, at No. 19 the only state team in the writers' poll, plays host to Limestone.
* Claflin, which hasn't played since Feb. 19, ends its hiatus with a Peach Belt Conference visit to No. 9 Columbus State.
* Columbia International, which already has 12 games against NAIA Top 25 teams under its belt, plays host to No. 21 Reinhardt for three.
* It's the final weekend before NJCAA Region 10 play begins. Florence-Darlington Tech plays host to a two-day tripleheader for the second straight weekend.
