Bryar Hawkins drove in an unearned run with a ninth-inning single as Clemson beat South Carolina, 3-2, at Founders Park Friday night in the opener of the three-game series.
Dylan Brewer reached on an error to lead off the ninth, went to second on a sacrifice and scored on Hawkins' two-out single. The Gamecocks intentionally walked Cooper Ingle three times in the game to get to Hawkins. The ninth inning was the first time it failed to pay off.
Clemson pitchers held the Gamecocks to four hits - two each by Michael Braswell and Josiah Sightler -- and struck out 11. Starter Mack Anglin struck out nine in six innings.

Carolina starter Will Sanders was brilliant, striking out a career-high 14 in seven innings. He left with a 2-1 lead thanks to a long homer by Sightler in the sixth.
Jonathan French tied the score in the eighth with a home run down the left-field line. The call was reviewed, but upheld.
