In past seasons I haven't named a team of the based off the customary three-day-long opening "week." This afternoon, I decided, "It's my blog; I can do what I want."

So, coach Tim Wallace's Pioneers got the nod for Week 1 after a mostly dominant afternoon against Roane State as a couple of hundred or so fans enjoyed moderate weather at Mooneyham Field. SMC outhit Roane 18-5 and outscored it 17-5. The visitors from Harriman, Tenn., got four of those runs on a Game 2 grand slam. Pioneers pitchers got 22 strikeouts in 13 innings.

Up next for the Pioneers: at home against Paul D. Camp at 1 p.m. Saturday Feb. 4.
