Cannarella, Petry get hits
Clemson's Cam Cannarella homered in the 11th inning and scored two runs as the Stars beat the Stripes in the first intrasquad game of the selection process for the U.S. Collegiate National Team.

The final score of the 12-inning game is listed as 15-5 in the story on the USABaseball.com site, but the box score indicates the score was 11-4.

Cannarella, in center field, was 1-for-4 in the workout at the U.S. National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. He also had a two-out grounder to second base that was misplayed to allow two runs to score in the ninth inning and scored himself later in the inning.

South Carolina's Ethan Petry, playing right field for the Stripes, was 1-for-5. He walked once and struck out once.

More intrasquad games are set for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in Cary. Series against teams from Chinese Taipei and Japan will follow.

Spartans raise broadcast profile

USC Upstate has signed a multiyear marketing agreement with  WSPG Fox Sports Spartanburg (AM-1400/FM-98.3) for coverage of Spartans athletics events.

A release earlier this week indicated there would be coverage of 70 live events, including men's and women's basketball, baseball and softball. I read a Tweet from Jordan Ferrell of WSPG that indicated "more than 30" baseball games would be broadcast. Games also will be streamed on the Internet.

Coach Mike McGuire's team won a school Division 1 record 38 games in 2023.

I suspect this means the end of the station's partnership with Presbyterian College for athletic events. If not, play-by-play man Ryan Clary is going to be a very busy person.

Upstate joins a handful of state schools offering baseball on broadcast radio. Others include Clemson, Coastal Carolina, Newberry, South Carolina and The Citadel.
