Clemson is No. 6 seed; Coastal, USC join Wofford in field

Clemson was named the No. 6 national seed for the NCAA Tournament on Monday as the complete 64-team field was announced.

Sixteen teams were named the top 16 national seeds regional hosts on Sunday. A four-team, double-elimination event will be played at each venue. The 16 regional winners are paired in eight best-of three super regionals (June 7-10) to determine the field for the College World Series (June 14-24) in Omaha.

Only if both national seeds are eliminated in regional play will any other team have a chance to play host to a super regional.

South Carolina received a No. 2 seed as an at-large team and was assigned to the Raleigh Regional.

Southern Conference champion Wofford earned the No. 3 seed at the Chapel Hill Regional.

Coastal Carolina got the No. 3 seed at the Clemson Regional. The Chanticleers' prospects were in doubt because of a late-season losing streak. The selection means Gary Gilmore's tenure as Coastal's coach continues. He is retiring after this season.

College of Charleston, which was hopeful of getting an at-large bid with a 41-14 record and Coastal Athletic Association regular-season title, did not get a bid. After the field was announced, it was revealed that the Cougars were one of the first four teams out.

Cougars coach Chad Holbrook was, to say the least, disappointed. "To have someone in a room that hasn't seen us play to tell us we're not good enough is asinine," Holbrook told WCIV TV in Charleston.

"I was a coach that got fired for going 13-17 (in the SEC at South Carolina)," he continued. "I know what a mediocre regular season is that many teams that got in had. We had a phenomenal regular season that was ignored."

The SEC got a record 11 teams in the tournament. Five of those, including South Carolina, were 13-17 in conference play.

Clemson will play Big South Conference Tournament champ High Point in the first
round on Friday. Coastal Carolina will play No. 2 seed Vanderbilt.

South Carolina will play James Madison in the first round of the Raleigh Regional. N.C. State, the No. 10 national seed, meets Bryant.

Wofford meets No. 2 seed LSU in the Chapel Hill Regional, where North Carolina will face Long Island.

The Clemson regional winner will play the winner of Stillwater regional involving Oklahoma State, Nebraska, Florida and Niagara.

The Raleigh regional winner will play the winner of the Athens regional involving Georgia, UNCW, Georgia Tech and Army. One of Army's top players is Braden Golinski out of Greenville High School.

The Chapel Hill regional will meet the winner of the Tucson regional, involving Arizona, Dallas Baptist, West Virginia and Grand Canyon.  WVU is coached by former Clemson player and assistant Randy Mazey. Mazey, who also served as head coach at Charleston Southern and East Carolina, is retiring after this season.

Upstate native Bradley LeCroy, a former player and assistant at Clemson, has his Virginia Commonwealth team in the Greenville (N.C.) regional with East Carolina, Wake Forest and Evansville.
