NCCAA South Regional
Darius Hatchette-Dunn and Collin Otte combined on a five-hit shutout of Carolina University as Columbia International won, 5-0, to claim the National Christian College Athletic Association South Regional at Miller Field on the CIU campus.
Carolina had defeated the Rams, 6-3, earlier the day to force a second game in the double-elimination event.
In the decisive game, Hatchette-Dunn went a the first six innings, allowing four hits and striking out five. It matched then longest outing of his career.
Otte went the final three innings, allowing a hit and striking out seven, to record his fourth save. He has struck out 54 batters in 34 2/3 innings.
Scott McDonough singled in Colton Lopez in the first inning for what turned out to be the only run the Rams (22-33) needed.
Graham Peeler doubled the lead with an RBI double in the third inning and a Carolina error allowed to more runs to score later in the inning. A wild pitch scored the final run in the sixth inning.
In the first game, Carolina scored four ruins in the first and never trailed.
Scott McDonough had a hit in each game and he went 7-for-18 in the regional which originally was scheduled to end last Thursday. Rain disrupted the schedule and location, with some games being played in Demorest, Ga., and East Bend, N.C., before returning to the original venue on Monday.
The NCCAA World Series is scheduled for May 18-22 at Kansas City (Mo.) Urban Youth Academy. CIU won the 2021 World Series when it was played in Easley.
North Greenville won the title in 2010 and Anderson took it in 2004.
